Ive been speakin to a few people who have had all the performance cars and they recon that imprezas are crap, thay are not that fast and they always break, can this be true???????

ive heard bad reports that when they break then they can go in a big way

but TBH i would call them 'slow', ok some of them are better than others, but a UK spec turbo will give most cars a decent run for their money.

and with imprezas as low as 7-8k its a real budget performance car

my opinion anyway.

Most of the jap import Imprezas die after 60k the big end goes on them :lol: If yo have a look at sidc or scoobynet there is allways a thread about it

My mate has a Uk turbo 2000 And I would never call that slow the thing does shift it's not ultra quick like an sti or wrx but its fast

I had a uk turbo 2000 and, while it was pretty quick, you really had to use the gears as it went no where in top gear at all, many top hot hatches are pretty much just as quick nowadays as a standard impreza, thats why I traded for an Evo!

In the space of 2 years of impreza ownership I needed a new clutch which was done under waranty, that was the only problem, don't think I'd buy another one though!

my dad had a jap spec WRX about 5 years ago (when they were still quite rare, believe it or not!) and that was quick. i think it was about 250bhp. saying that, it was a real minter - when converted it had only done about 28000 miles, and had jap service hist with it. nothing ever broke on it, and it got driven pretty hard. my dad's good mates with a jap specialist dealer, who said they're about 10x more reliable than european fodder - its when people start messing with them, or not servicing them properly that they go bang in a big, and expensive way...

as for UK turbo 2000s, i don't think you could call them slow - they're still about 200bhp. but i could imagine modern hot hatches (civic typr R's etc) keeping up with them

Bibbs is right - Depreciation means the Impreza has fallen into the hands of the Chav massive. Having said that, it doesn't stop them being !Removed! good cars - They have a hell of alot of cross country pace and gerat damping. For the money, nothing else really comes close (bar the Evo VIII FQ330, obviously).

Big ends do tend to go on Imprezas. I think alot of Scooby owners use this as an excuse to go for full-on engine rebuilds with loads and loads of tuning mods. I do believe that the gearboxes aren't super strong either although they're far from puny!

On the whole though, !Removed! good. I wouldn't mind one. Lots of people will begin to dismiss the Impreza owing to its now Cossie-like reputation.

My bro wanted a GT4 but a good un cost too much so he went for a 2000 Scooby wagon - they are fast enough to leave Civics and other hot hatches the car has 130k miles and still going strong - to get extra power is very easy he got some electronic goodies (HKS) for £500 from a friend which should take the car to 300BHP

I'd rather have a MR2 Turbo or a GT4 or convert the rolla to 3S-GTE

Indeed. The prezza was one of my list of choices in my hunt for a tunable Group 18+ car. They are good cars until you start modifying them. Which is sad because it is a performance car and therefore should be able to hack tuning for gods sake. But then...you can say 'but your not modifying it properly'. Ok but I dont fancy spending 10 grand for a return of 400bhp and an edgy engine. I can get a solid reliable 450 BHP for £5k all in on an mr2 tubby.

Heres what I found...

Scoobies are good in 1rst and 2nd...they are cack after that.

Weak gearboxes.

They eat clutches even after light bashes.

Are expensive to tune (not much gains either for the dough).

Rear diffs are weak.

Stupidly bad fuel economy.

Very very very very very very very common.

Very common.

You get the idea..cant be nothered to continue the list..every Subaru owner has had problems with thier car whence tuning commences.

But hey...they make a hell of a sound. You cant beat a good ol boxer burble sounds kick azz. Plus they have four doors which is a great plus

As part of my job I had to deliver a WRX type RA (rally spec lightweight version runnign some stupid amount of boost) to a customer some 300km away. That was NOT slow at all and it had no trouble turning the wheels in any gear (albeit a close ratio box). I got a whole day to do it but was told by my boss that I was responsible for it. Bout 70km out the speedo died. What to do? The quickest car I ever driven and I couldnt tell how fast I was goin!!! Of course, the cable had broken. But yeah like you say they use insane amounts of gas and I think that it is the No. 3 cylinder big end bearings that give out. The 6 cylinder 3.0l in the RS-30 Legacy is just as bad. Those two rear cylinders really have to fight for their cooling. You couldn't pay me to own one but drive one yeah sure.
