hi, new here.

i own a 59 plate iq thats 4 years old and due for its next service. phoned toyota and they quoted me £189 for a full service but this does not include a plug change as he said they only need replacing after 6 years. so basicly paying for an oil and filter change. so ive decided to service it myself. could anyone tell me how easy are the brake pads to change also. have also found that haynes dont do a manual for the car. many thanks

Hi There, welcome to the forum.

I do my own servicing now as my car is 3 years old and out of warranty.

In the last service I drained the oil, changed the oil filter and refilled with the recommended grade of oil from my local motor factors.

Checked the air filter, I have an aftermarket washable filter but change it if it looks dirty.

Replaced the cabin filter behind the dashboard as that was blocked solid.

Checked all the other things like brake fluid, brake pads, cooling level Etc.

Couldn't really think of any more to do, just the oil and filters?

I have thought of looking at my spark plugs but the car has done 20K miles now and to get access to the plugs you need to remove the inlet manifold from the engine. Mines a 1.3, iQ3, not sure if the 1.0 engines are any easier. Not too difficult but something I'll save for a while.

The brake pads look dead easy, two bolts on the rear of the calliper and the calliper comes apart revealing the pads. You may only need to remove one bolt and simply pivot the calliper around the other one like a hinge to get the pads out.

The rear brakes look much the same but watch out for the handbrake cable, don't want to bend that too much.

A chap on here used to sell Toyota workshop manuals on CD. I'll let him post if he still wants to sell them.

thanks for the reply. what did you use for getting the oil filter off. ive got a strap wrench, will that do the job as it has worked on all my other cars.

What engine do you have?

My 1.3 engine has a paper filter element inside an aluminium housing accessible from underneath just behind the sump. I had to buy the correct tool, 64mm, 14 flute socket to get mine off as it was pretty tight. Found the tool on eBay for only £16

Looking on eBay the 1.0 filter looks like a standard canister type filter so I imagine a strap wrench will work fine so long as there is room to get it in there and around the filter.

i have got the 1.0 engine. had a look underneath this morning and thought it was a cannister. so should be a simple job.....

did you fit a new sump bolt washer or just used the old one. i have never used a new one and never had a problem.

Not entirely sure there was a seal or washer on it? Anyway, I didn't change anything on it and it's sealed again so I think you'll be fine. :)

Replacing the pads is fairly easy, just need a caliper wind back tool for the rears.
