Auris Brake Wear ?

I viewed a 2011 auris 1.6 this week,beautiful car with 6500 on the clock,

But I noticed copious amounts of copper slip paste on the front brake pads...presumably to stop squealing, and tthe rear discs were lipped,as well as the tyres(Dunlop) seemed quite worn for a car of this mileage.

Is there a known problem with this model for brake and tyre wear.....thanks.

There have been issues, certainly with the early Auris (2007-2008), re brake squeal - I believe this was largely resolved through different designs of pads. Didn't have any issues with brake squeal on my 2009 Auris in my 3 yrs of ownership.

With my previous cars, the brakes were front biased - the fronts always produced more brake dust on the front wheels than the rears. With my 2009 and my 2012 Auris the opposite is true - the rear wheels get covered in brake dust more quickly than the fronts.

Tyres - the front tyres on my 2009 Auris were at 4mm at 16000 miles (Continentals), the rears had 5mm. No particular issues re tyre wear.

I would NOT touch a car with such low mileage for its age. The engine is probably knackered.

As for the tyres, maybe I am cynical, it sounds as if the car may have been "clocked"

Or has it been "ragged" by boy racers?

Just my opinion.

Depending on which month in 2011 the Auris was registered, it may only be 18 months old.

why would the engine be knackered? We see lots of very low milage cars within our network. I have 1 customer that does roughly 700 miles in a year.

If it has been used as a town car for those 6.5 k depending on what the measurements are for the tyres i would probably expect them to be on about 4-4.5mm

It used to be that low mileage cars that have only done "town work" would not have been run long enough to get the engine up to full working temp.

This causes a lot of engine wear.

If you were to then take it on a long motorway run it would probably start to use a lot of oil.

I have seen this in older cars in the past and this put me off buying used low mileage cars.

Maybe things have changed with the newer engines.

Nothing wrong with a low mileage car maybe only 18 months old. Modern design and oils should be no problem for it. I personally would prefer a low mileage used car to a reps hyper miler that had not been serviced properly

If it an ex demo car then no real problems.

It's just that the OP did not mention that it was at a dealers.

As for the tyres, it's anybody's guess as to why they look like that.

My Auris is just over 3yrs old and I haven't even rotated the tyres yet, mileage ~25K

As to low mileage examples. Our 1.4 Corolla is 10 yrs old and has covered just 26K. Most of that is down to "shopping" trips, it rarely gets to full temperature and over only a couple of miles (at most, often its less than that distance) may see 3 or more stop starts with a short wait of a few minutes in between each. It still has the original battery/exhaust system/brakepads/discs and is dealer serviced once a year. Tyres needed replacing 2 yrs ago due to cracking in the tread bottoms. It burns no oil and as proof of that last year had 3 weeks of daily 40 mile motorway trips at typical motorway speeds i.e. what everybody else was doing.

My 2010 SR

16600 miles, Dunlop tyres rotated at 8000 miles, front discs lipped about 1mm, pads 25% worn.

rear discs less than 1mm, pads about 25% worn, tyres just under 5 mm all round and in good condition.

No sqealling brakes and all in good condition.

The car you viewed is still under warranty so i would ask would a Toyota dealer slap on copious ammounts of grease?

I would think no they wouldn't, but who did and why?

and for the discs, pads and tyres to get as you describe in 6500 miles would make me very suspicious of it.

Just because it's in a dealers means nothing.

My son who knows nothing about cars, bought a Honda civic from 'Glynn Hopkin in Chealmsford' because he trusted them.

They were just like carcraft where they take a car in, give it a wash and vac and put it up for sale, and then wait and see if anything goes wrong, it had 3 odd tryes on it, (the R reg Honda civic coupe he traded in had better tyres on it, Mitchelin with 4mm) low oil level, no washer fluid, no cabin filter and the brakes were worn out, he foolishly took it to them for a service 4 months after he bought it, this should have been done before they sold it again, they told him the pads were 90% worn and the discs were even worse, and they wanted £1000 to renew them, I was involved at this time and he told them where to go, they are nothing but crooks who were telling elderly customers who knew no better that their 3 year old civic needed tyres, pads and discs all round and they agreed to it because they trusted them, he will never buy a Honda again. so buyer beware!

On a more positive note, Vantage Toyota in Preston where i bought my car could not have been better, honest, straightforward and no B/S.

That's interesting... guess where I have the Auris and Corolla serviced, and where they were bought... Vantage Preston :)

Even when I had my TSport and with 70K on the clock they still said the (original) discs and pads were fine, even though I said the front discs were (to me) quite badly lipped, and they no, they are fine, maybe just pads next time (80K) but the discs were still well within spec.

Now that to me is being honest.

That is what I expect from a Toyota dealer, it's good to hear of good service.
