2013 Auris Winter Tyres

A bit early, I know, but can anybody recommend a good winter tyre for the new Auris?

I intend to get a set of 15" steel rims to mount them on for the winter - any advice based on experience would be great. This will be my first winter tyre purchase, having owned a 4wd Qashqai for the last 3 years before my Auris.

Thanks in anticipation.

David

I don't have the new Auris model David, but I do use Klebber Quadraxers (made by Michelin) on my 2008 SR180. I can definitely recommend them & also the Hankook i'cept that I had on my previous car. I use them for around 6 months of the year - we've actually just had a snow shower up here !

Presumably you'll be looking for something like 195/65 R15 T's.

Doubt whether many will have had winter tyres on the 2nd generation Auris, so replies will probably be based on 1st generation experiences.

See what replies you get based on experience, and if need, I could have a look at the latest Which? report for this size of winter tyre.

If you have access to a which report that would be great to hear about....thank you 😃

Nokian all the way.

I had a set of wr2's on my Accord, lasted over 30k and they were left on all year round, only had to replace them because I hit a pothole. Then put a set of wr3's on last November and they were just as good through the snow and ice we had here in March.

Vredestain (spelling may be off) are another good make, but a bit pricey.

I have been running on Continental Winter Contact TS830 195/65 R15 91T and I cannot fault their performance as winter tyres. They are excellent.

My mileage is not as good in the winter as it is in the summer (have a look at my Fuelly data) and it is possible that the tyres contribute to this to some extent, but I haven't gone to the trouble of trying to isolate the tyre element from all the other factors that make mileage worse in the winter.

I paid £75 each for them (including fitting and balancing) at Blackboots in Chesham, but that was three years ago.

Some great info there so far folks - thank you to all who have replied thus far

Hopefully by the time we get to October we'll have a wealth of info to base our decisions on :)

If you are considering buying, don't leave it too late in the year, it is surprising just how much the price goes up after the summer

I have used Michelin Alpine A4 for the last 3 winters. As well as being good in the snow, they are also low rolling resistance.

Hi Dave,

Did you manage to source a set of 15" wheels for your 2013 Auris, and did you settle on a make of tyres?

I have had in the past had a set of winter tyres fitted in November, on the standard rims, but that was on an older model diesel Auris.

I now have a 2013 Hybrid Auris with 17" low profile tyres and I'me not sure if low profile winter tyres are a good idea?

Be careful with 15" wheels on the Auris Excel with 17" wheels, it has larger front brake discs than the Auris with 15" wheels as standard.

Toyota sell a 15" and 16" steel rim that supposedly fits our cars, it is part of their winter options catalogue. If I remember correctly they are about £70 each for just the rim.

I bought a cheap set of 15" alloys, but unfortunately they had an inner lip that reduced the internal diameter to 13" and they foiled the front caliper due to the disc size.
