Hi again guys, just dipping into your pool of knowledge once again!hehe :P

I was driving along calmly last night, when suddenly my stereo went crazy switching on and off, and my lights were fading...

I thought, i was either being abducted or my Battery wasn't chargin the car correctly! pulled into a bus lane, got good ol' AA to come to my rescue, turns out, my alternator isn't charging the Battery. It has already been re-conditioned so ill either be looking at a second hand one, or brand new.

I need some advice if anyone knows any garages in my area (Reading), and maybe how much i'd be looking to pay!!!

Any help please guys?!

Cheers

Dave!

I have just spoken to rogue and they were VERY helpful. :D

Unfortunately, like LOADs of people, they aren't in stock at the moment.

He gave me a couple of numbers to try, which i have called and managed to confirm that i can get one shipped to me on a saturday delivery for about £75 (inclusive of VAT) which i thought was ok.

Couple of problems though...

I need to know if its an Oval or Circular fitment on the 3S GE, apparently they weren't all made the same. I am at work so im not with the car, but i need to order it today, or i wont get it for saturday....

Also, i'll be fitting it myself on saturday, does any one have any ideas as to where i can get fitting instructions etc...i figure - i gotta get my hands dirrrty at some point eh?!?hehe

HELP HELP HELP HELP!

Cheers

Ah yes the good old oval or circular plug problem. The later cars have a circular plug, the earlier ones oval. Unfortunately there are no firm dates as to when the change took place. My car is a '93 and has the latter circular type. Best way to find out is to actually disconnect the plug from the alternator and see. There are two plugs, the larger of the two will be the one that is either circular or oval.

Good price for an alternator, I had to replace mine a few months ago, and counldn't find a second hand one anywhere - so had to buy genuine Tioyiota new! Least I got it for £250. Just got to rebuild the old one now.....

As for fitting it, it is easier if you remove part of the exhaust system, that way you can actually get to it. Also, be sure to soak the three mounting bolts a couple of days before. They tend to get seized - which is exactly the problem I have with the white car (pictured). Unfortunately one bolt no longer has a head, so I'm gonna have to drill the bugger out!!!

Cool, well i have a guy checking it out for me today...

Its actually the 3S-FE engine, so the guy is going to ring me back.

.......

I just got a call from the guy, really helpful, but got to a problem.

Because its the 3S-FE engine, he doesn't have the direct one for that engine.

He has an equivilent which he is pretty sure will fit off a celica of the same year which also has the 3S-FE. Only difference being celica is obviously FWD. Will all the fitments be the same? I need to order this before 12ish to get it on a saturday delivery...he's going to call back soon with any possible variants!!

PLEASE HELP!

ASAP!

hehe

tbh it wouldn't have been too mind blowing to fit it yourself, just a socket set and away you go. "fitting is the opposite of removal" as the haynes guys put it

Fitting is easy enough in theory, the problem is you have to remove other stuff i.e. part of the exhaust to get to the alternator, so you will have even more seized bolts to contend with - which can put a serious amount of time onto the job.
