Ammonia Smell Inside The Car

Bought an Auris 1.6 just the other day and the car works, well, fine but there's ammonia odour inside the car. I've searched the net and there's obviously problem with this in some other toyota models but couldn't find anything about Auris. What could be the remedy to this problem? It's worst when the car's been standing out in the sun för a while but I noticed by accident when I approached the back seat and bending down to pick up the floor matts just after stopping the car that the odour was present even then.

Any advice?

Having done a web search on this, the only model it seems to be an issue with is the 4runner - where it seems to be down to an exhaust problem.

We've had five Toyotas from new, and not had any problem with such smells.

Could the previous owner or the dealer have used a bleach based cleaner on some of the upholstery prior to sale??

Thank you Sir!

Upholstery seems to be wiped an dust free so I reckon that some sort of celan up must have had taken place. I'll check with the reseller to see what was the case. How can I eliminate this? Clean cloth and water only? Or has all this gone chemical and some more drastic measures are required?

In time the smell should disperse. Could try something like Febreze to disguise the smell in the meantime though.

Couple things I can think of that might make a smell in the car - water in the boot they are prone to leaking rear lights the water goes down to the spare wheel and soaks the mat etc, other is air conditioning smell/cabin filter.

A short report...

The smell has dispersed significantly but it's still there. It seems that air conditioning is the source. The cabin filter is new. I'll check the boot mat but I don't think it's the problem.

Thanks for all the answers!
