Boot Leak Avensis Saloon

I have a 2002 Avensis saloon and recently found the spare wheel well half-full of water and the boot mat saturated. I saw a number of mentions of this kind of problem, with complicated solutions. But almost all of these related to the hatchback.

I found that my problem with my saloon was much simpler, and it was easy to solve.

There is of course a channel running roound the outside of the boot seal and water is supposed to drain away down that channel. On either side near the top / front there is a section just a few inches long where a welded seam at the base of the channel runs up to the edge of the back window. This seam has of course been spot-welded, and the seam made watertight with mastic.

My car is nearly 11 years old and the mastic had cracked. I overpainted the mastic with non-drip gloss paint. Problem solved.
