Celica Vvti 2004 Problem

Hello all ,

After days of reading on internet about Celicas , I bought myself a 2004 VVTi Celica . It has 77.000 miles on the clock and service history till 60.000 miles.

I changed the oil with Mobil Super 3000 5w30 and after doing 1200 miles the oil dropped down at 70% between min and max on the dipstick.

Do you think is an oil burner? I bought a 2004 after reading forums on internet but it seems it didn`t help me too much.

Can you help pls?

Thx

Can you remember exactly how much oil you put in when you did the oil change? Also did you pre-fill the oil filter before putting it on?

If memory serves me correctly, the 140 takes about a bit under 4ltrs of oil with the filter, so about 3.5ltr without. So you put the right amount in.

Best thing to do is fill it up to full and use it as normal, but check the oil level every couple of days for a couple of weeks. If you find that it's going down, then you're either burning oil or have a leak somewhere.

Hopefully it won't be doing either and its just a case of the oil nicely getting into all the places it needs to be.

Thx for answers. I bought a facelifted Celica hoping that is not gonna burn oil but probably it does so. I txt the last owner and he told me that he used 10W40 semi-synthetic grade oil when changing . I used 5w30 fully synthetic oil so I`ll try now and change it again to see if helps .

Don't do that!, 10W is the correct oil for a Gen 6, not Gen 7, and will increase engine wear on cold start (especially in Winter).

In a VVTi, you have the correct viscosity in your engine now.

Personally, I don't think you have an oil burner, just that you put slightly too little oil in at the last change. My 2004 VVTi takes a full four litres when changing the oil filter too.

It is not losing oil, i checked evertwhere and I`m able now to tell you that after 2.300 km I topped up 1 litre of oil.

Also at a closer look I can see some black spots on my rear bumper around exhaust so I think probably is burning oil.

I like the car but probably I`ll be forced to sell it , I have it for 2 months now .

Consuming maximum of 1ltr of oil every 1000 miles is normal and Toyota state it in their handbooks. If you have your handbook i'm sure it's in there somewhere, as they list this for quite a few of their cars they manufacture. It was in my handbook for two of my previous cars.

Plus previous owner using 10w 40 would have caused a little more wear on the piston rings, depending on how long it was run for on this grade oil, and any short journey times etc.

Try running some seafoam through the engine first before getting rid of it.

Also oil burning issues can happen to any engine in any car if not properly maintained. It was just poor engine design on the 140 engines that led to the problem in a shorter period of time than what usually takes a lot more miles to happen.
