A Real Challenge...strange One

Hello everybody as you may have guessed I am looking for some help with a strange problem with a 2002 avensis d4d.

When I go up the gears from 2nd to third the car feels as if it is hanging itself and then it seems to clear and all seems ok for a while.

The best way I can describe this would be it feels like the turbo has monentarily stopped working.

Now here is the strange thing...this happened in the past and a mechanic I know bypassed the fuel filter that is on the bulkhead and the car goes like a bomb,no problems with hanging at all...but I know this is not a permanent solution, but without that bypass the car was undriveable.

Ok like any normal person I thought the problem was with the filter itself, i changed it to original Toyota but it didn't cure the problem.

Then I changed the housing that sits on top of the filter that has the inlet and outlet pipes, as far as I am aware there is a heater on that housing...I didn't change that because I was told it wouldn't help, and it was costing £85.

I told you it was a strange one...any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

Wierdness. I'm stumped. In the absence of other specific replies it may be worth asking your mechanic who bypassed the filter his opinion. Seems he knew of a reason to bypass the filter so perhaps he can help to remedy it?

Thank Druid, we have eliminated all the usual suspects, even had the fuel tank out in case it was an intemittant blockage, but still no resolution, I went through some of the replies to other posts especially one entitled turbo cutting out, but their resolution was already checked by mechanic.

I am convinced it is not a turbo problem but more of a fuel problem, but cant seem to get to the bottom of it.

Like I said I have replaced the filter housing apart from that little bit that I have been told is a heater, does anyone know if that in fact IS a heater or does it do something else that could be adding to the problem.

Like I said bypassing the fuel filter eliminates the problem completely.

Thank you.

Never heard of a heater on a fuel filter before and can't think why you would need one. They do have a sensor that detects when there's too much water and crud in there I think. I wonder if it is something else that is operating poorly and cannot overcome the resistance the fuel filter introduces. I know that SCVs cause problems similar to yours (Suction Control Valves). I thought mine were on the way out but a new fuel filter cured it. Thinking about it now it kinda makes sense that the SCV may be your problem. Too little suction = loss of fuel = loss of power. Remove filter = less resistance = easier to suck fuel through. Kinda makes sense.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to test the SCVs but I do know they are expensive to buy so, unless you have a friend with the same car who is prepared to lend you his SCVs to do a trial I'm guessing it's a trip to a specialist to do a diagnostic for you.

Let us know how it goes.

I think guys have found them on eBay but I don't know whether they were new, used or had any guarantee. You could give Parts King a private message and see what price he can do but as I recall we are talking a few hundred quid so if you can get them tested first I would. Flippin expensive thing to change if they don't solve/aren't the problem.
