Toyota Warranty Wont Fix My Car

I had a long weekend in Plymouth driving down from the other side of Brighton in my 59 registered Auris with 11,000 miles on the clock (bought from new in days of scrapage deal)

Anyway, on the way back I went to overtake a van on some dual carriageway, changed down, accelerated a bit and the engine started to die.

Pulled over to check and it seemed to be running lumpy so I drove it a bit further to get off the main road to a safe spot and called the AA.

AA turned up okay and said the normal "these never go wrong".

He agreed it was running rough and plugged in his diagnostic computer which showed no faults.

Next he tried unplugging the coil pack leads from each spark plug and the number 4 one made a difference to the running but less that 1,2&3 so he suspected that.

That also generated four events in the fault logged which he cleared as sometimes he said that would clear an issue.

It did not :(

Thus time for a tow van to my dealer in Brighton (in fact two tow vans due to distance).

I also of course had all my equipment in the car to deal with.

This was all last Sunday.

On Monday I called my dealer who said they had checked the coil packs and injectors and the next most likely thing was valve rocker damage due to over revving and it was nine hours of labour just to get to them costing over £1,000.00.

I then said I have the extended warranty but it would seem they are unwilling to proceed with the work.

Any thoughts please? I also did not realise that the warranty is not Toyota but they outsource it to the same company that did Comet warranty.

In my little Toyota extended warranty book it says "Toyota is committed to fixing it. It's is as simple as that" - That's what I thought till this weekend.

Attached is the speed log from my Garmin GPS till the car failed.

I am now in my 50's and have been driving since I was a teenager and have never had an engine failure.

Car stripped to camshafts (it has two), and several of the cam followers have popped out but none are damaged and thus the job is not covered by warranty.

They same this is normally caused by excessive revs and if that is the case it was not on purpose.

It is going to cost me about £400.00 to put them back in, new gaskets and labour :(

Assuming its petrol do you have a 5 or 6 speed box? Looking at that speed i am guessing you changed down to 3rd. Sorry to say this but I dont think you can expect any warranty to cover you hitting the red line (even accidently)although i guess you have a reasonable expectation that the rev limiter would kick in to prevent damage...Is it possible you have blown the head gasket too?

Six speed manual 1.4 I think.

I think I changed from 5th to 4th but cannot find anywhere on the web which list the speed range for each gear and the manual is in the glove box of my car.

If I had changed from 5th to 2nd at that speed when I engaged the clutch one would have felt a severe lurch of the car due to the speed difference.

It is a shame the ECU does not record any excess engine speeds in its log. It would then be a cut and dry case to who was at fault, the driver or the engineering of the engine.

They have done a compression test on all cylinders and the head gasket, etc all seem to be okay.

Ah ok I assumed you had 1.6 engine. Its interesting that the engine was damaged as i have had my 1.6 bouncing off the rev limiter in first and third before with no apparent resultant damage.

The 1.4 petrol was replaced in 2008 with the 1.33 - is your car the 1.4 D4D diesel?

As far as I'm aware Toyota use The Warranty Group (formerly Aon) to manage their extended warranties -they are still underwritten by Toyota.

My V5 says it is 1329 CC Petrol.

Yes, from what I could find at that time (before the 5yr warranty) that the extended warranty was by "The Warranty Group UK Ltd"

They may I guess now use someone else?

I've got my car back and all seems well (expect for another whole in my bank account).

I thought I would check the owners manual for the maximum speeds in each gear but my book at least does not seem to have that information for the six speed box

Based on the information under Technical my one has the 1NR-FE Engine 1329cc

But under "Driving Procedures" on Page 164 it only has a table listing five speeds.

Assuming a 5 speed version exists I would have assumed the gear ratios would be different for a six speed version?

Do any of the later versions of the owners manual have different tables? My manual is dated 2009 Publication No. OM12D68E 02-0904-01

Maximum speeds in each gear is completely different from missing a gear and over revving it, any sudden change in revs to the extent it goes past the red line is a completely different scenario to driving it to the red line

I cannot see this happening anyway. If you valve bounce the engine by red lining it you rarely get away with just being able to put it back together, seems strange to me but we dont have all the facts

Kingo
