Bang! What The...? Airbag Isue?

Driving along rather sedately this morning and al of a sudden there was a huge BANG - like a ballon going off but much much louder.
It seemed to come from the front passenger area inside the car.

There was nothing on the road that I had hit, no glass, no dust, or other debris, and no smell of anything.

Nothing under the hood looks like it has exploded.

The only thing I can think of what it may have been is the airbag trigger going off. But he airbag did not pop out - it still appears to be intact.

Is this possible?

I'd like to think that if your airbag detonator went off (highly unlkely) the airbag ECU would know and therefore the airbag light would now be on. The only other things I can think of are maybe a broken spring, or a high power electrical relay at the fusebox blowing, or maybe even something stuck to your tyre being thrown against the inner wing?

What are the chances that you ran over a polythene bag on the road?

They can go pop with spectacular results :)

Cheers guys. I have had a look and;
Airbag light does not stay on - comes on when key turned then goes off as expected
Spring intact
All electrics seem to be intact
Don't believe I ran over anything on the road - I'm sure I would have seen and avoided (as I'm always wary of stuff getting caught up in belts)
So I'm at a loss. But definately felt (and sounded) like it was in the car - damned loud.

And I'm not going the crash it to test if it was the airbag trigger

It is not possible for the air bag to detonate but not deploy, you would smell it and there would be a huge amount of smoke and a chalk like / dust material in the air

A similar thing happened to me once, I didnt think I had run over anything but I went back along the road to see if anything had fallen off the car! It turned out I had run over a turnip a mile futher on there was a tractor with a trailer full of them, the odd dozen or so falling off the trailer as it travelled along, first time ever a turnip has scared me
