my best mate has one and he is a toyota mechanic, ive learned that they do rot badly on the front and rear arches along the wind screen uprites and the worst place is on the sun roof. all of which can be fixed. as for the colour coding i beleave the red and the black are also avalable in all in one colour. unfortunatly my mates is metaliic blue and the bumpers have to be plastisied before being painted or the paint will flake. he has done this and i admit it looks quite smart! hope this helps a bit!!

Basically the AE82 Corolla was a four seater MK1 MR2 ,it had the same 4A-GE 1600 Twin Cam Engine.

Nearly 90% of them that were sold were white-It was popular in that colour because it looked more sportier.

The only major problem with them is body corrosion normally around the arches and tailgate and can be expesive to put right.

To be honest the later 88 on Corolla GT-i 16v is a much better car doesn't suffer from corrosion as much.Even better are the AE92's built between 1990 & 1992 because the have more bhp (129bhp)

I hope this has helped a little

Chris

thanks for the help guys. i would go for an AE92, but because they are known as a GTi-16, they won't insure me. Plus, i heard that the AE82 handles better, and is actually slightly faster, due to it weighing less. i think my main problem will be finding one, as they were always quite rare, so now they'll be even rarer.

trust me though, i've only ever seen factory colour coded white ones, and that's out of red, black, and two horrible gold and peppermint green colours!

also, does anyone know if the strut braces were factory fitted, as the one my dad had had one fitted??

They normally had only a factory front strut brace which was painted a metalic grey colour

okay, so i've finally bought one! white, 92k, FTSH, 1 owner from new, 1985.

the sunroof isn't too bad, but it has some rot starting around the top of the windscreen. how can this be put right? obviously the screen needs to come out, but what then? any ideas on cost?

i would like to sort it, as these are the only two bad areas on it!

You need to find out how bad the rust is. My ae92 is suffering really badly around the screen, but it was hammerited and sprayed (badly) about a year ago. If it is not holed through then you can just take it back to bare metal, fill it and repaint it. However, this is not really recommendable as the rust will just come back again. To get it replaced is obviously the best option, but this is very, very expensive. the best bet is the take it back to bare metal, cleaning off all the rust, then coat whatever metal is left in Kurust (avaliable from any Halfords of car parts store). Give it a good couple of coats then if there is no holes or dents then spray it up again. If the surface is uneven then you will need to fill it a little with a fibre-glass based filler. Its not expensive or difficult to do. The whole operation is fairly simle as long as you can take your time wih it. I'm just beginning to repair mine, three new arches to start with ( :( ) and then onto the windscreen surround. Oh joy....

Good luck,

-RIDDLES-
