Oil Recommendation

Hi, I have a 4.4 diesel my first ever (privately owned) diesel. This is my 4th Rav and I tend to err on caution when it comes to oil changes because I don't do a lot of miles, about 8000pa would be average. Consequently I change the oil every 6 months.

Please no comments about that's not enough to justify a diesel engine, it was bought for the torque and after 3 petrol engines Rav's my wife and I are pleased with its performance.

5w-30 is still the choice for the engine from the owners handbook and I heard somebody mention low ash.

Can I have the Rav forums advice on the oil of choice, I have read that the incorrect spec may have a adverse effect on the DPF and that is something to avoid.

Thanks in anticipation. SteveC.

Steve

The factory fill is 0W/20 fully synthetic C2 oil with a low ash content. I bought some off eBay but it is very expensive. The only manufacturer I could find is Mobil1.

I was recommended (on here) Morris' oil. They have a reg plate look up thingy (sorry for all the technical talk) on this page;

I've bought in bulk and got it cheap! I do the minor service myself and use Mr T for the main service (but supply them the oil to use at substantial discount!)

Used on my Rav and my (ahem) LR, twice each, all's running well!!

Dave

PS my car was spec'd the multilife C3 which I believe meets all requirements and some.

Anchorman that info was appreciated but I had no idea what the factory fill spec was but the grade 0w-20 to C2 spec that has expensive written all over it.

I assume the C2 spec is the designation for low ash amongst other qualities. I remember seeing a mobile oil display at the dealers and I was wondering if the dealer or more likely Toyota were joining up and that particular brand was going to be the oil of choice when servicing was carried out.

Well 0w-20 there is a challenge, I have seen 0w-30 but never the former.

Thanks SteveC

Only petrol engines are factory filled 0w20 oil, all diesels fitted with A DPF are factory filled with 0w30 C2 oil. C2 being the low ash specification.

Oil Grade Oil Viscosity (SAE) ACEA C2 0W-30

Standard Capacity

Drain and refill without oil filter change 5.5 liters (5.8 US qts, 4.8 Imp. qts)
Drain and refill with oil filter change 5.9 liters (6.2 US qts, 5.2 Imp. qts)
Dry fill 6.3 liters (6.7 US qts, 5.5 Imp. qts)

Aye - the memory is a bit duff these days due to being full of unnecessary work rubbish.

Watch eBay and every now and then somebody comes up with a box of 12 for about £5 a litre. You could quite easily use Mobil1 5W/30 ESP C2 which is cheaper but the low viscosity is used where the "optimal drive" spec is shown for lower fuel consumption. You can expect the engine to consume small amounts of these oils as they are fully synthetic but it may settle down with time.
