My friend has a 2006/7 Aygo with 52,000 miles on the clock. It has just suffered gearbox failure with no drive at all. It was towed to a garage, according to the AA one of only 3 in the area capable of looking at it! They have come back today saying it's the electrics at fault...£1400! Any ideas or suggestions please, seems an awful lot of money to me!

Take it to Toyota Garage. Automatic gear boxes in Aygo (MMT gearbox) are complicated.

The 'auto' gearbox in the Aygo is a motorised manual gearbox, not a true auto. Have a search the Aygo forum for 'MMT Gearbox' for previous posts.

"Electrics at fault " is no diagnosis at all. Proper diagnostics from the gearbox ECU should discolose what has failed.

From the link above http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/133167-aygo-mmt-full-technical-data-pdf/ you will see just how complicated the box is. As posted above take to Toyota garage only. I think it extremely unlikely that the motors and ECU have all failed and £1,400 would seem to cover the lot.

The actuator alone (should it be needed) is £1070 so it would be very easy to get to £1,400,

It does need a proper diagnosis though, the MMT system can be troublesome so it does need to be looked at by somebody who understands them
