Chip Tuning Box?

It is very common for manufacturers to run different versions of BHP on engines, little is changed apart from the mapping, but of course this is done through the ECU. Where you cannot crack the ECU, a tuning box is the only option. For instance Toyota did a 200 BHP Hilux Invincible, this was done via a genuine tuning box fitted at the import centre

When a manufacturer makes an engine, they build in huge margins of error, there are so many variables such as climate, fuel quality etc that they have no control over, so to some extent, the car is actually detuned to accommodate these variables. There are also other things that they do to limit torque, electronically via the ECU, many manufacturers limit the torque for the first 1000 miles or so, it kind of gives the car a chance to be "run in" as some people have no respect for a brand new vehicle and will drive it in a spirited fashion

Like everything in life, you get what you pay for, you cannot compare the cheap resistor boxes made in China to something like ours or Steinbauer, where a lot of development takes place to make a quality product.

Customers want choices, some want maximum MPG, others care little of MPG and it's all about power. It's easy to say if you want more power buy a bigger car, for many, that is not practical

I think you will find the difference between the engines of 136 and 180 versions are vast, even the injectors on the 180 are a piezo design to tolerate the extra pressure. if you want more power you have to use more juice, if you want to get more fuel from one of these engines you have to run them leaner, this completely alters all the ommision factors Toyota spent millions on. if you wan't more fuel drive with a lighter foot....A chip will not alter valve timing, or inlet design, or compression pressures I think the 180 as a lot more compression tha the 136 or 150 version, a chip can't alter that, I'm not sure the chip you are selling can alter turbo boost, so it basically it alters the amount of fuel pressure, resulting in a richer or leaner mix... On A lighter note my wifes Rav4 goes in for another re-call next Friday, hope it's the last

There is a difference between 136 and 180 engines, so we are not comparing eggs with eggs. You are correct, if you want better MPG then you need a lighter foot on the pedal, however, a decent tuning kit with the increased torque it gives you means you don't have to change up and down the gearbox all the time, this is the upside of more torque, so you get better MPG. If you drive it like you stole it with your new found torque, you will not see any better MPG

Our kits alter fuel AND boost pressure, certain models like the ones for the 2.2 150 and 180 also have a connection for RPM data too

Recalls are ongoing, you can never be sure there will never be another one, lets hope you are right though

I can understand your thoughts about chip kits because you are selling them, I have worked on many vehicles with kits or have been re-mapped about 2% actually save fuel, and not many get much extra power without fitting a better air filter, if you stick more fuel in, you need more oxygen, if you don't get more oxygen you are just running a richer mix, not good for anyone, many kits have a rpm data connection, it's what the chip kit does with this info to make a difference to the actually running, I would love to see some calculations to how a chip kit produces more torque. I do know Mr Toyota spent millions developing ECU's etc, and a chip kit will not give you extra torque without a compromise, we already have the compromise in the standard ECU etc. If the chip kit gives more torque using less fuel why did Toyota not use a different map in the final release..... My wife runs her Rav4 with a K&N filter and a blanked off EGR valve she gets more power/torque but the compromise is, it sounds like it's got asthma.....Mr Toyota would not sell his Rav4's sound like that....

Sorry for the late reply, I have been off a few days

Yes we do indeed sell kits, my customers anecdotally tell me what they save on fuel, and for many, 3 to 6 MPG can be 10 to 15%, my own GM always has one fitted to his RAV, and his savings are 5 MPG consistently on a 2.0 version. I have seen very many cars with so called "better" air filters, the only thing they do is make noise, the difference in performance is burger all. We have dyno'd very many cars to see what our kits do in terms of power, and the torque is the big winner. I have explained why Toyota do not give you this torque as standard, it is because they work with huge margins of error and have to have a car that will perform in many markets whatever the climate and whatever fuel you can put in it. One thing we all take for granted is good quality fuel, however the truth is something altogether different, even in parts of Europe you cannot guarantee fuel quality.

I have tried to upload a dyno of before and after on a T180 but sadly TOC will not let me upload the image for some reason, although I have uploaded it many times in the past

I do not expect that chip kits are for everyone, but for many they would like more torque for a variety of reasons, whether towing or for just more grunt. Quality kits work, they give more torque and better MPG, its a fact, but a cheap box with a cheap resistor inside it will only do one thing, it will fool the engine into thinking it is running cold and therefore over fuel, and that will never be good long term

Hi Guys,

Recently purchased an automatic 2015 Rav4 ICON D-4D Diesel. Had a quick nose of posts. There seems to be a few variants of type of vehicle (I hope I have quoted mine with enough information).

So, to business. Do these posts refer to my type??

Kingo (I believe?) could you get in touch with a price please?

Most of my journeys are 30 miles round trip, but I do once a month take longer runs 140 or 400 miles round trips dependant of whom I am visiting.

Thanks in advance :)

This is a 9 year old thread ... 😉

A 2015 RAV4 diesel automatic will be a 2.2 D-CAT IIRC - the D-CAT includes emissions control to stay within the Euro 5 limits. This was the latest and final variant of this engine - the posts in this thread refer to earlier variants of the same engine.

Personally, I would feed it with premium diesel and leave it well alone - just as Toyota intended ...

You might want to PM Kingo to see whether the Lindop kit is still available rather than simply 'hope' that he spots your post.

Hi - has anyone used a tuning set/drive booster on a 2017 2.5 Hybrid 4WD?

If so, what gains are you seeing?
