Over Revving Engine

My 07 Auris has run fine since I bought it last July, until about 2 months ago.

It now, normally when in 5th, over revs, almost as if the clutch is slipping. I have had the clutch checked, seemingly fine. It normally gets to just over 3000rpm, wizzes up to 400rpm, and then drops back down quickly to just below 3000 again. The car also tells me to change up a gear (normally ignore the arrows, but hard to when you are already in top gear and the car is revving like crazy!).

It doesn't always do this, often when I put my foot down. But when it first started it was doing it in all gears and no matter the speed or angle of the road etc.

I have had a mini service, as garage said it may be dirt in the oil so and oil change was done. It also got run through diagnostics and nothing was coming up (hardly surprising when no warning lights have come up either).

Has anyone else had any troubles similar to this????? Help me please!

Which engine do you have? Petrol (1.4 or 1.6) or diesel (1.4, 2.0, 2.2)? Manual or MMT?

If the revs are shooting up but the car doesn't ***** or accelerate at all it can only be the clutch; I'd guess either it's worn or the friction surfaces have been contaminated with something that's causing it to slip. Might be there's something up with the clutch hydraulics also, but it's gotta be something in that area...

(Seriously? J e r k is considered a swear word??)

Like the previous poster that is symptom of a worn clutch.

It's usually more noticeable in the higher gears.

That is the problem with second hand cars. It depends how previous owner(s) drove the car.

Where and tear.

You can check the clutch in following manner: when car is stopped, press brake pedal, in the same time pull hand brake strongly then put the gear in 3rd and release clutch pedal, in same time accelerate hard; the engine must stop, otherwise clutch is worn and it must be changed.
