2013 1.3 Trend First & Second Gear Selection Difficult

Evening,

Just a quick question for any 2013 model owners - is anyone else noticing problems getting the car into first or second gear?

Longer explanation...

I have been driving my wife's car this week and I really struggle to get into low gears, from a junction I have to force it into first and then once rolling it crunches into second. Every other gear selection is smooth.

It is a struggle to drop into second too, I.e. when turning into a junction. For want of a better word, the gearbox feels "dry". Also, moving the stick between first and second causes a squeaking sound - not from the gaitor, it's like the gear lever is somehow misaligned and is rubbing against the gates & not moving smoothly - if that makes sense?

The car is only 2 months old and covered 1000 miles.

Anyone else experienced similar from their cars?

Cheers,

Colin

Shouldn't be like that. I have a 2012 Auris 1.33, which has the same engine and gearbox, and the first/second up-changes/down-changes are pretty smooth. Looks like a trip to the dealer is needed.

Same thing with my 2011 Auris 1.33 when new. Also had problems from 5th to 4th. Took it back and they adjusted the gear linkage, fine after that.

Hi,

I phoned Premier Toyota this morning, the guy I spoke to came across as a tiny bit patronising at first - am I sure I'm putting the clutch down fully, check the carpet mats type of thing - but he was amiable enough and even confirmed that it may just be the linkages as the car shares the same parts as last year's model (as per Frosty's reply) and that gen did suffer with the gearbox.

The car is being picked up from my work on Friday and he has said I will have it (or a loan if necessary) back by lunch time.

I'll update when I have news, but if they actually do what they have said I'll be a happy chappy.

Hi, I have had my Yaris Trend for 3 weeks and had the same problem along with over reving when changing up the gears. I took it to my local Toyota dealership and they said that the gears were tight and this was common on new cars also the over reving is normal and is something to do with the emmissions??. They said they lubricated the gears and so far it seems to have done the trick, the over reving comes and goes. Unfortunately my car went back into the garage today as the shift notification and fuel range aren't working :( I am also waiting for a new decal to be fitted as the valeters at the dealership got a bit too close with the power hose and caused the decal to bubble and come away slightly, apparently this has happened before! Not a great start to a new car, maybe I should have stuck with my 10 year old Avensis.

You get used to the 'over-revving' when changing gears - noticed it at times with my 2006 Corolla and my last Auris. Don't notice it at all with my current Auris.

Thank you, that's reassuring. Car is back from the garage all sorted, just the decal to be replaced.

Well, the car is back, and the gears seem to be ok, the gear lever still squeaks between first and second though, but at least the gears are selectable.

I don't know what they have done as the car was dropped off and my keys were left with security. I'll see how it goes for the next week or so.

Yes! I picked up my new Yaris 2 weeks ago and have been struggling with second gear especially. I did take it back but surprise surprise they said 'are you pressing the clutch fully' and 'I'm having no problem' but I'll persevere. It seems to be getting looser but that might just mena I'm getting used to it!

I'm now having issues with the Range facility - I put £10 fuel in the tank and it's telling me I have 10 miles left (despite having 1/4 tank).

It's very frustrating. :disgust:

You have to add more than 15 litres of fuel for the range meter to recalculate. £10 is but a dribble nowadays it is a function in the fuel computer.

Thanks Devon Aygo. I had an '04 mini before which was extremely reliable and it didn't matter if you put £2 or £200 it would calculate the range. It's these little issues that's making me wish I'd stuck with the mini ;)

I have had similar problems especially second gear since getting my Yaris in June. It has been back to the dealer twice each time they changed the clutch cable but it is still the same. How did you get this issue resolved?

I haven't had this resolved. The car frustrates me daily. I commute 50miles a day so never have a chance to take it back.

I would give this car back in a heartbeat : (

Well, it is never going to be fixed if you dont take it back in is it?

See if they can collect it and arrange a loan car for you

The control unit was lubed on mine and adjusted, it made it much better

I bought a 1 year old Yaris 1.33 TR last week. 1st to 2nd is really crunchy and difficult to do. I have tried pressing the clutch fully down, sometimes that works, mostly it doesn't. I am very annoyed as this is obviously a known fault that has not been addressed. My 8 year old Jazz that I traded in had no such problems.

Also can anyone tell me if their Yaris has a green symbol on the instrument panel that lights up when the sidelight/headlights are switched on? I have never known a car not have this facility. The dealer says Yarises do not have it, but the picture in the handbook suggests it's there in the top right hand side of the instrument panel. The blue symbol for main beam works ok.

A small issue - there was no ashtray/rubbish bin (that fits in the cup holder). Does the Yaris not come with this either? Dealer says not. Also the boot light didn't work, one of the keys had no remote control facility and they had told me it had done about 3,000 miles but only once bought did I notice it had done 5,800 and that's because I asked to see the service record book. All in all I am not very impressed with Toyota. My first and last probably.

Any help much appreciated.

Poor shift feeling is easily fixed with an adjustment of the shift cables, it is not a fault the shift sensation is different for everyone, all the cars leave the factory with the same setting and only a few clients feel they need an adjustment.

There is no need for a headlight /sidelight warning symbol on a new Yaris as the dash illuminates with the lights on, Toyota only include a green light for cars where the dash is always illuminated.

The ashtray is an accessory part if you want one.

The other issues are down to a poor dealer, hardly the cars fault.

Thanks Kingo, I know. I toolk it back after 3 weeks of owning and after a quick drive they concluded there was no problem : (

I will take it back again though.

Green beans, I was annoyed about the ashtray/cup holder thing, I asked them how much an ashtray would be and they said £60+vat!!! I'm in the look out for something suitable to keep change in!

I have the ashtray from my 2009 Auris - never used for anything - which fits in the cupholder. If interested (for the cost of postage) send me a private message.

Hi,

My 2nd gear problem seems to be sorting itself out slowly. The dealer has re-coded the key that didn't work, the boot light not working is apparently due to a faulty switch on the boot lid - awaiting new part. They did however give me an ashtray. Thank you all for your help.
