Well this got me off to a worry. Sorry about all your issues David, nothing's fun about finding out your newly bought car is trash. I don't mean to hijack your thread, I just wanted to see if anyone could answer my question.

I just bought a Toyota Avensis Estate 2.0 D4D-F (in the Netherlands) from 2006 which has 140.000km on the clock. Is this a common issue with this motor as well? If so, what should I be looking for?

I don't have the car until Sunday, but I prefer being prepared for these things.

What's common? In the UK it's believed to be in the low single figures %wise & supposedly it's worst in the UK due to our fuel ...

Heidfirst, I was referring to the issue with the gasket. I was wondering if my model was part of this as well.

Your model is part of it, but unless its loosing water I honestly wouldn't be concerned

I'm relatively new to owning, not to mention maintaining, cars. You guys are extremely helpful!

I'm guessing I should just be looking for water pools/spots on the pavement under the car, right? I feel like such an idiot for asking these things. :)

Look for the coolant expansion tank under the bonnet, it's see through and should contain pink coolant. The level should be between low and max. There is also an overflow pipe that comes out of the bottle, if you notice fresh coolant stains around the fan belt area and the tank hasn't been overfilled then you have a problem. Keep an eye on the oil as well - Enjoy!!!

that's what I was replying too. It seems anecdotally (for Toyota aren't saying publicly) that the T180s maybe worst affected, followed by the 150bhp 2.2s & then the 2.0s.

You may want to read http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=10987 although we know that guidelines have changed since then.
