Rav 4 2.0 D4D 2005 Model

Hi i am new to the site so here we go.

The beloved rav4 belongs to my wife, last week i had a call to say she had broken down without any warning, The problem was caused via a leaking water pump, which inturn has ran dry and cooked the engine, it is now at a garage awaiting a new engine...

So here is my plight, i have searched the internet for a full engine so the garage can drop straight in to replace the broken one, also the clutch is on its way out,

The car has only done 56k so is still worth the repair.

Different people are advising me diferent things on what to check when buying a second hand engine, mainly feedback and warranty.

SO Question to The Forum - is there any recommended places i can get a second hand engine which can guarantee it will work?

Thanks for taken the time to read my plite

Mark

Hi Mark - and welcome to TOC!

the engine in your motor was produced right at the end of the 2.0 D4D run, before it became the 2.2 D4D in the RAV4.3. If you are looking for a secondhand engine, ideally you want one of the last ones produced as by then most of the "issues" had been at least partially addressed by Toyota. There are several dealers in secondhand engines who have internet sites, some where you enter the description of what you want and they come back top you with an offer(s)

Known issues with the earlier versions of the 2.0 D4D were:

1) the DMF ( Dual Mass Flywheel ). This is well documented on this forum and there is a particularly good explanation by Anchorman in the "pinned" section at the top of the forum contents list. It's not a show stopper as with the engine out replacement would be a great deal easier and cheaper than doing it in the car. Replacement options include conversion to the SMF ( Single Mass Flywheel ) which several members have used successfully. This is considerably cheaper than the DMF.

2) The other issue which crops up on here periodically is the SCV's ( Suction Control Valves ) on the fuel pump. Again, not a show stopper and a definite candidate for a DIY job ( and diagnosis ) if it occurs later in the vehicles life.

The other issues are ones which could occur on any secondhand engine ( wear due to poor servicing, i.e. changing the oil and poor storage conditions for the unit after it had entered the "secondhand" market )

Don't hold me to this, but I seem to remember that Toyota themselves sell reconditioned engines. It would certainly be worth sending a PM ( Personal Message ) to a guy called Parts King on this site as he would not only be able to provide a definitive answer but in all likelihood, a discounted price for a unit. HTH. Keep us posted as to how you get on and don't hesitate to ask if you need any more info. GOOD LUCK - the later RAV 4.2's were a cracking motor and you are likely to get a lot more reliable service from the motor if you can get it fixed.

Hi Mark,

I suspect that the 56 plate is a 2.2D4D rather than the 2.0D4D that you have. Do you have any identification for the a) engine ( number? ) or b) the car it came from ( VIN number, registration number )? The 2.0 and 2.2 engines are not "interchangeable" if you think in terms of just taking the old one out and slotting the new one in. Does the supplier know if it is a 2.0 or 2.2 ?

At the top of the forum subject list is a "pinned" section. One of the articles in the list is about the "RAV4 model range" since it was introduced ( to the UK ). It is worth a look at the article so that you will have an idea about what you are being offered. Just bear in mind that some of the 2.0D4D RAV4.2's were not registered until after the 4.3 had been in production and on sale for quite a period - so you might just be lucky. Post all the information you can get on the donor car/engine on here and someone will almost certainly know what you are being offered. HTH.
