Fault Code Po420 & Po430

Could do with some input on this, my Rav4.2 on a 51plate and covered 105000 miles.

Engine light came on as I was making my way home on Monday, it was still on the next day when I went to work, but when I left to come home it was off and so far has stayed off.

My local indie, connected his plc and read codes Po420 & Po430.

His said that it could be a sensor (or two) or the cat, but the only way to prove it, would be once the fault returns to connect it to a MOT grade exhaust reader and see what the emissions were. If they were OK then its sensors, if not then its the cat.

Is this logical, as some threads suggest Mr. T garage will just keep changing items...

If it is then sensors then I assume it best to stick with quality?

But what about the cat, suggestions as this seems an expensive piece of kit.

Thank you for any help

Have a search on the forum for P0430. There have been several threads. I replied to one that is about the 7th down using a question from my sunday paper about this but there is quite a bit of advice. Welcome to the mad house btw.

It depends upon which of Mr.T's finest that you use. In my experience, where I've had a few sensor failures, most have been pretty good.

However there was one that kept replacing failing sensors when the real problem was that the cat was shot! This only became evident to their "technicians" after all the sensors were replaced (fortunately under TGB extended warranty) but also after the warranty expired a few weeks later! Consequently a new cat was required at my expense as Mr.T refused any goodwill despite the c0*k-up by the dealer.

The moral is to make sure that the dealer is sure about the source of the codes, i.e. cat or sensors, before brainlessly replacing sensors willy-nilly. Unfortunately, Mr.T, like most manufacturers, trains their "technicians" to follow processes not to use any original thought. 99% of the time, the process is well-thought out and solves the problem efficiently but the 1% of problems (like this one) would benefit from the guys asking a few questions rather than blindly following procedure.

Thank you for your help.

Its as I thought, buyer beware, and don't just accept that what your told is gospel.

If it does come down to a new cat been need, is the one from Mr T best or is there a good quality aftermaket out there ?

One of the experts on here would need to comment but in the meantime I'm not sure that you can get pattern cats for RAV's. Mine came from Mr. T with a £600 bill.
