All,

Firstly id like to to say hello as im new to this forum, Im here to try and get a some assistance.

I bout a E reg Carina middle of the road condition all cosmetic really few scratches needs a Hoover kinda stuff. How ever true to my luck its smoking excessively white moist with water and smells a little oddly. I checked fuel and seems to be ok i flushed out the engine and put fresh oil in and flushed it again, the idle is now sitting at 1500 rpm and sounds very smooth.

But its still smoking this may be just a time thing but the fan isn't coming on and the engine is over heating in almost no time at all.

so if any one can help me or ask me questions for more information then please go ahead.

Regards,

Jon

A lot of cars give out a lot of steam from the exhaust especially when cold, if that's all it is, then it's not really much to worry about.

Sounds like a possible headgasket failiure, check the coolant for signs of mayonaise type sludge, also under the oil filler cap.

this more than the usual old car smoking.

checked the radiator and its fine no oily deposit. but i did notice a little gunk under the oil filler cap after cleaning it.

Well test the thermostat ensure it's not stuck closed, I take it the coolant level is dropping. With smoke/steam like that it still sounds very Headgasket like. Get the cooling system pressure tested then you'll know.

Thanks GLI.

Im thinking the same with what you and some one else i asked has said, How difficult is the gasket to replace.

I have done a fe rocker head gaskets and motorcycle engine seals but never done this kind and never owned

a toyota before.

Any one with a manual able to pdf the pages for this so i can look and see if its worth my bothering.

I believe the gaskets are £50 ish ill use an account to get them trade price though, more new oil .:eek:

Every time i go near cars they seems to break think ill stick to the 2 wheels as my main transport.

Thanks for the help guys.

In comparson to a rocker cover gasket a complete nightmare! You'll need a manual for the 4AF engine, a lot of tools, time & patience. Not an easy job.

Hi All,

Well I got a quote from a dealer at £400 bucks all in........wont be doing that thanks!!.

How ever i can get the gasket set for £30 bucks inc vat. the guy at the shop traced the engine number 4A-K62X aparently single cam??????

Ill find a place willing to pressure test and skim the head (garage wanted 80 bucks) I know i can get that cheaper. A few friends are willing to assist (mechanics) for a small fee so im reckoning i can get this done for less than half the toyota garage quote.,

i need to look around some breakers for a cylider head though Just in case any one know any good places for toyota parts?.

what a load of hassle.......lucky white heather ill tell you bought this damd thing while im fixing the slector forks and shift cam on my yamaha.

never rains but it pours.

Hi

If you suspect a Head Gasket is blowing take the car to an AA service centre they will do a Hydrocarbon sensor test on the radiator header tank; this will confirm the leak or not- the test on mine was done free. cheers Jim.
