Headunit Lcd Display Isn't

Hey all,

My brother's Mk1 Yaris has developed an odd issue - The centre LCD display that shows stuff like the time, what radio frequency, volume, CD track number etc. has stopped working!

He says that after about 20+ minutes it used to come back on of its own accord but has now stopped doing that.

The buttons and stuff still work, although there is now a bit of zen involved.

When he's next down I'm going to remove the xcarlink to see if that's what is causing it, but it'd be a bit weird as he's still able to use it to play MP3s and as an AUX for his music player.

Anyone ever had anything like this? It's a Mk1 T-Spirit D4D (But with only 3 doors :P)

I have never attempted this job on a Yaris, but on several other cars which I have dealt with problems of this type I start with a close examination of the connectors, and I mean close examination! Sometimes the corrosion is only slight, and difficult to detect but enough to drop the voltage enough to cause the type of problem you describe. I clean the plug connectors and receivers with very fine emery paper about 1000 grade, wrapped around a cocktail stick. Any printed circuits should be examined for any signs of moisture corrosion usually shows up as a white patch, which can cause tracking. Also examine everything for any signs of dry solder joints. Finally check both the supply voltage and most importantly the earth. Good Luck.

Okay, we finally got around to taking it apart.

Quite easy job aside from the connectors, which are fiddly little £$%*$s!

Can't find anything obviously wrong :(

Sprayed contact cleaner on all the connectors and stuff, still nothing.

The MFD is a separate unit (Part# 86110 52140) so I'm gonna look into replacing that and see if that fixes it...

Thought I'd post an update!

After picking my jaw off the floor from getting a part cost (£770?! ) we decided it wasn't worth fixing and just ignored it.

My brother was down with me for a few weeks and when he got back his Battery had died; On getting it jump-started the MFD magically sprang to life!

So apparently the IT Crowd fix ("Have ye tried turnin' it orf an' awn againe?") works on cars too!

I didn't even consider disconnecting the Battery to be a potential fix!
