New Auris Diesel Engine

Hi guys, I am planning to buy the 2013 Auris hatchback in 5 years time. I was planning to get ta 2.0 D-4D but it seems there is not 1. Is it really the biggest diesel engine is 1.4 D-4D? And is the D-4D turbocharged or just standard? And is there hope in the future that toyota will release 2.0 D-4D turbocharged as the previous Auris?

Toyota and BMW are supposed to be working together on new diesel engines - too early to tell as to whether these may appear in the Auris, or whether Toyota intends to offer the Hybrid in place of a larger diesel (I suspect this is the case).

The 1.4 D4D is carried over from the first generation Auris, and is turbocharged, producing 90bhp.

In five years time the second generation Auris will have undergone a mid-life facelift (probably around 2016), and will be due for replacement - Toyota lifecycles being around five/six years.

Thanks for your responce. Yes I heard too about this toyota- bmw allaince and im not really satisfied since german engineering these days is having great reliability problems. I also heard that they are working together for a new sports car but as you said nothing is sure about that and sorry I didn't understand the last bit of the face lift

Most models undergo some sort of facelift mid-product cycle - some facelifts being more extensive than other - t keep the model looking fresh.

IIRC there is a 2.0 D4D Auris but it's not sold in this country :(

Oh ok so I might have to wait for hopefully bringing a decent diesel engine, and I hope it's not hybrid...

Yes I heard something but not even in my country it still haven't arrived. Tho I doubt it if it exists since even on car reviews I only saw 1.4 d-4d :/

Although I'm sure it's Toyota's intention to make more & more hybrid models, I believe there is still a decent size market for 2 litre class diesels. Both private users & rental companies like this size & engine combination.

Well AFAIK the beamer engines they'll be getting are 1.6 turbo units, not heard of them picking up any bigger ones so might be out of luck there. That and beamer engines have a reputation for really poor turbo reliability (I know so many BMW owner's whose turbo has gone blam!)

Toyota have effectively stopped R&D into diesel sadly; Not surprising given that !Removed! generally hate diesel (Toyota only really made their diesel engines for the European market!), and diesel is getting screwed over by emissions regulations anyway which makes them waste R&D resources on making their diesel engines worse to comply with the regs (I'm sure we'd have topped 100mpg by now on diesel if it wasn't for the emissions regs forcing them to use wasteful emcon devices like DPFs and EGRs)

They basically are top-dog for hybrid systems at the moment so it makes sense for them to plough R&D time into that and push forward with it in all models for maximum return. I'm glad they didn't shy away from putting it in smaller cars as I've always said it makes more sense in small vehicles like the Yaris and Aygo anyway as HSDs are best in the type of driving those cars do!

I did say about 3 years ago diesel was dead, nobody believed me :rolleyes: Cyker has covered it off nicely :thumbsup:

Another thing I said was that Toyota will have a Hybrid in every model by 2020, something else nobody believed.............watch this space for a few years hence then eh? :lol:

But I hope they at least keep the 1.4 Diesel lol for the future, I don't like petrol that much xD We have a 1981 toyota hulix, 33 years old, 800k miles and NEVER a problem (only power break and master cylinder last month), I respect toyota for that and I want to be their costomer but I hope they don't give up on diesel engines and release some manual hybrids!

As posted above the new Euro 6 regulation which come into force in 2015 are very detrimental to diesel technology as it focuses heavily on nitrogen oxides and particulate matter something which petrol and petrol hybrids are currently very good at and diesel even current models are quite poor at.

If you look carefully at upcoming technologies other manufacturers are all looking to add petrol hybrids into their ranges very soon something Toyota is already the market leader of hence why BMW have joined forces with Toyota, BMW are even given the reputation for Turbo issues recognised as one of the best Diesel engine manufacturers, so Toyota benefit from diesel technology for European models and BMW get our hybrid technology cutting development cost by millions and millions of pounds/euros

Really? I thought VW had the reputation for good diesel engines?

When people talk to me about diesel, BMW is not one of the names that springs to mind... as opposed to, say, Toyota, VW and Fiat... :unsure:

Anyhoo, yeah, it is a shame as diesel is still the most efficient IC tech around.

Still, what I like most about diesel engines is THE TORQUE! :D

Hopefully by the time I need to switch, Toyota will have beefed up the HSD or gone full electric to the point that they can tow stuff, which would imply the torque is up there with diesel once again! :D

Then we can work on the Battery range problem... (500 miles on a single charge without having to drive like a granny will be tough to beat...!)

Yeah infact toyota started the hybrid system back in 1997 and now we have a good hybrid system. The only thing I dont like is that they are only available in CVT transmission and for me that sucks cause I am more of a manual person. Also I prefer diesel on petrol anyday but from what I am reading in few years time no more diesel engines are going to be produced :/

It's a shame to see the impending demise of diesel as I too prefer the torquey nature of it's delivery. Pretty much any turbo-diesel that isn't idled for a few minutes after a long/high speed run will eventually detonate it's turbo - starving the bearings of oil is a well-known problem. That goes for any manufacturer that doesn't provide a separate oil supply after the engine is turned off .......

As for hybrids, well I'm aware that many owners swear by them & that's great. Unfortunately I much prefer a combustion engine noise (not a simulation) & a manual gearbox - that to me is driving, not being driven by a soul-less machine. But it's all horses for courses & the holy grail for many years now has been lower CO2 emissions, along with mostly unachievable MPG figures. So if you just refer to your car as a means of transport & nothing else, such modern trends will not concern you too much. But for me it's a worrying road we're travelling for anyone who still enjoys the art of driving & a car with any hint of character. Just my tuppence-worth :)

yeah me too, the diesel sound can't be compared with a petrol or hybrid, neither the fun of driving. Well we just hope that Toyota keep it's "legendary" 14 D-4D. It has been dragged ttrough lots of cars like the corolla hatch, new and old auris and yaris etc so we know that that's a good reliable engine. The rest I don't care but I think toyota or any other brand won't eliminate diesel cause they will loose half of the costumers.
