Front Disks And Pads

Hello all.

Car was in today for it's service and Mr T recommended new disks and pads upfront. Quote £240..

I have looked on Japarts and we're talking £130 for the parts only so maybe £240 isn't ridiculous.. however, as this is a job i can do myself, i figured i'd do it this way and save some cash.

So, having never done this on a Rav, is there anything i should be aware of? And what disks and pads would you recommend? I was planning on going for Mr T genuine parts. Can I get these somewhere that's not Toyota at a cheaper price?

Thoughts?

Here's a wee thought, Webz min.......what is your hourly rate at work......? How much of the £240.00 is the labour content, hassle factor, and probability of sumfin going wrong....? Have done both Funnerburd Wan and Too's before, but I am retired and have hunnerz of time.....think on.....sit and play with yer wean whilst Mr.T DOES YER CAR.

Personally, I would go onto Euro Car Parts and get Pagid discs and pads for £130 and fit them yourself. Thats still an £110 saving and pagid brakes are decent. Cant see much going wrong with a simple discs and pads change.

Personally I would buy genuine ones off me for a tenner or so more, DELIVERED to my door, they are made for the job, have Toyota warranty and will fit first time!

Strange how we ( not me.....) always THINK we are saving that kinda money........naw we aren't.........that would take me 3 hours absolute minimum, not allowing for cleaning the guides to Anchorman's standards (bordering on clinical.....) So 3 precious hours of my leisure time into the notional "saving"...nah.......if you are skint, different for sure. Only my opinion of course, as usual.....

A local garage would charge £30 max to replace front discs and pads, so if Kingo is delivering the originals to the door for say £140ish, thats still a £70 saving, its not like replacing discs and pads is a specialist job - any mechanic could do it.

An independant would want to supply AND fit parts, I doubt very much that if you rocked up at his door he is going to make the effort to fit them for £30

Lets not forget on the prices quoted above, the labour charge from your dealer is only about an hour (depending on area-£80 plus VAT) so maybe a few quid to be saved but not a fortune

Could not agree further......local indie, as soon as he saw me with my parts in hand, so to speak, wanted £78.00 cash.....had to be CASH. Took the REAR discs, pads, handbrake shoes for 3 door to Mr.T, who gladly did the lot USING MY BITS, and even discounted the labour rate "due to car's age" (2004).......will look out the bill and report back accurately, but I was chuffed to bits. All used parts laid out on paper in boot.

The indie's nose was well out of joint when he saw zero parts mark up, and I know whose parts were fitted.

It's an expense we have not budgeted for, especially as we are budgeting for a negative cash flow when Mrs W is on maternity leave come November.

It's a job I can do myself so if i source the right parts at the right price I will do it myself.

(And before there is outcry about going on a nice holiday this year, that is budgeted for, this aint!)

Happy to give anyone my Paypal details if anyone wants to contribute!!

A few years back I got discs and pads changed on the front by Mr T. Not a "bad" price (think it was £240), but last year I changed the rear discs and pads on my "other car" (starts with an L and breaks down a lot- NO prizes) and realised how damn easy it is!

Sourced quality non genuine parts (£70 the lot- Delphi brand) did on a Saturday morning and know its been done properly!

Wouldn't hesitate doing it again myself- easy job.

Rear pads and discs on the Rav not difficult either, Dave.......until you factor in the requirement for a gynaecological degree to remove and fit them wee handbrake shoes.......buggeration factor very high.

I agree front discs and pads easy to do with some common sense and a few tips on here, rear brakes are easy as long as you can swear at the handbrake shoes when you cant get the disc off, or just try loosening the handbrake cable first and save the expletives for the idiots on the road......lol

I need to do my rears soon but was thinking on ebc or mintex any suggests?

I did my fronts a while ago with Mintex pads and discs, quick easy job and they are still looking fine, unlike the originals that did around 12000 miles before pulsing because of bad corrosion areas on the braking swept surface. Wasn't the concensus that OE are mismatched pads and discs ??

Hi Mick,

the early 4.3's seemed to suffer from depositing, particularly on the rear of the brake discs. I changed mine - 08 model - ( first time ) at 42k miles and the backs looked very "unattractive" even though the motor had just past an MOT(?) test and the brakes worked perfectly. Bought original discs and pads from Kingo as the pad material is different now. Job, even the back ones, was very easy and I had the satisfaction of knowing that the rear drums had been cleaned out properly, the handbrake linkage was clean/free and the handbrake was properly adjusted ( see "Hints and Tips" article by Anchorman ).

Next job is waxing/treating the underside if we get another dry spell in August

I have used Milners for years for all sorts of parts with Pajero, Sportstrak, Land Cruiser, various others and now my 2001 RAV 4.

Never had any issue, wouldn't go anywhere else!

They carry all the brake requirements for 4.2's and onwards. I have them on mine, all fitted by me with no problem. The only tricky bit are the parking brake shoe steady coil springs, but with a bit of deft handwork with large, needle nosed pliers (and much patience!) they do all go together well.

Far less costly than the Main Stealers and the satisfaction of knowing a good job well done.

The alternative could well be the daft lad, with no satisfaction........................
