Squealing Belt Noise

Hi all

Everytime I turn on the AC, that horrible squealing noise comes on. And just recently (after starting the car in the morning), the same thing happens but without the AC on.

But whilst I'm driving, the noise seems to go away. Is it a loose fan belt or do I need a new one ? - if it does need tightening, can I do it myself ? - please bear in mind I'm a complete novice.

Also, what are the repercussions of driving with a belt that needs looking into ? - is it dangerous ? - will it damage any major parts ?

It's a 2001 Yaris CDX btw, and not sure if the belt is original or whether it's been replaced in the past.

Thanks in advance :)

Is a fairly common problem with us older Mk1 Yaris owners; It's usually a sound like water rushing or a horrible squealing sound that goes away once the engine warms up.

The problem is usually caused by the ancillaries belt, which is starting to slip. Tightening it a bit or, if possible, replacing it are usually the proper fix.

I need to get mine done soon as it's started doing it too; The noise gets a LOT worse on cold winter mornings!

To be honest, I've just left it. I don't tend to use the AC that much anyway. I'm just thinking, maybe when winter comes, it's gonna sound pretty bad without the AC on (because of the extreme cold).

But then again, maybe not. I'll see how it goes.

We had this problem but on our 06 1.3 Yaris

Common problem relating to the drive belt

Ours was till under Toyota used car warranty so fixed by Mr T by replacing drive belt with a modified one

That was 18 months ago and no problems since

Parts King might be able to advise on which part number is the modified belt ?

My old 2002 Yaris SR did this regularly. I used to tighten the belt up every service and fit a new one every 2 years. Its a very easy job you can do at home and the belts cheap as well.
