Gearbox Trouble

Well the romance is but 2 weeks old and we've already hit rocky ground. Today the gearbox has started making a clattering noise in 5th gear. Noise is worse under load but always there.

Anyone had similar issues? Hoping I don't need a new gearbox as there's none on eBay ATM.

Car is the diesel version, which is complicating matters.

Thanks for the help guys. On route to Car Transplants to pick up a box, £195 + VAT and its only done 35k so I'm happy with that.

Looks like that's my Saturday planned, going to pick up a new clutch as it makes sense to do them both.

It took 9 hours to collect the box and pick up a Mazda 6 door (another story) on Friday. Car Transplants were great did me a favour removing the box at short notice so I could have it before the weekend and a good price too, Friday afternoon on the M1 and M6 though was a mare.

With help from my brother who has a garage we set about it on Saturday. Most bits come off easily, which is nice. The front bumper is best removed and the cat/downpipe has to come off, one of the exhaust clamp bolts had to be cut off. Bottom arms were separated at the lower ball joints the rest was very straight forward and the old box came out after about 3 hours. The old fluid was a very black colour which was a nice confirmation that we were on the right track.

I don't think the diesels suffer the same as the petrols do with the 180mm clutches, I bought a LUK clutch from ECP after asking them to price match carpartsforless so I could collect, over £200 knocked off the price without them batting an eyelid. Notably the old one was virtually unworn it looked almost new so I'll keep it as a spare.

All in it took 7 hours, not bad for a first attempt with no manual and we did a service , dropped the coolant and I treated some small rust patches on the subframe and cross member.

Total cost £450 and I think it know owes us some reliable transport. I'll open up the old box and see if it can be refurbed, hopefully recoup a bit of the cost.

hi inman999 car transplants are great, if you dont have to have the part today they will post it to you,i have always had good quality parts off them and they are knowledgeable people thats why i would recommend them,finding them is easy aswell once you come off the m6 at j16 stay on the a51.
