T180 Misfire

Hi all, unfortunately our car continues to be plauged by one fault after another. This morning just going through town centre when it suddenly went all lumpy, massive vibrations and as if someone had just pulled 2 injectors out :( So I limped it to the nearest Toyota garage as I dont know if its related to the engine change / rework etc? The service guy had a quick listen and said it couldnt be driven any further in case the DMF gets damaged by neat Diesel.

So am just awaiting the dreaded call to say what the next bill will be, I have a feeling this one wont be cheap - a cr*p end to an already naff week :(

How in the name of Friar Tuck can "neat diesel come in contact with the flywheel"......? I feel a major education coming on.....sounds like a totally choked fuel filter to me......

As Kev said..But as they said could also be worn DMF related.

And on the plus side if it is Toyota engine work related then it should be covered under warranty.

Did they renew your glow plugs?

4.3 was pretty well devoid and cleared of the DMF problem, Paul, even these earliest wans I believe.

Sorry all - I meant to put DPF and not DMF!! No idea what was replaced when the work was done last time, I know the injectors are marked relevant to the cylinder but that's about it. The car now has 110k so guess the warranty won't come into play either?

Depending on when the engine was changed will affect the chance of a warranty claim and of course the age of the car ...

If its within that 7 year period and 111.000 miles then maybe you have a chance..

You also badly need to establish exactly what was and was not changed at the time the engine was done.. This information is vital so we can at least try and advise....

Charlie, my invoice just has a 1 liner stating engine warranty work carried out, there isn't a detailed breakdown unfortunately. Also in your sticky about the engine problems it says that they may replace injectors, but I don't know the criteria around whether they should or shouldn't have been changed at the time as I suspect these are the culprit...

Garage just called to say number 1 injector failed and EGR blocked again! Anyone for a T180???

If you were not given a new engine number for Swansea in That Wales, it smells like you have had the REBUILD done as opposed to REPLACEMENT engine, which may have been the edict at the time, so do share.......when was it doned.....?

Good points Kev... The more info the less questions we have to ask in order to help....

J... Go to the Dealer and ask for the history of the car.. They should have everything that has been replaced on the computer but I say "Should" because they missed quite a bit of what was done to my car..

Anyway its down to the Dealer to check what is and what is not in tolerance when replacing an engine. If say Injectors or DNPR are knackered or near knackered then they will replace.. If they are within tolerance and showing no signs of problems they will leave them alone.. A fair bit of this of course is at the Dealers discretion ... Criteria yes of course but the Dealer can be.. Well on side or not.. They have massively differing attitudes it seems !

I would be curious to know if like Kevin has said above was your cars engine replaced or rebuilt ?

Does the engine burn oil at the moment ?

How many miles since it was done ?

What fuel has been used since the rebuild/replacement ?

that's good to know Kev...

My 2006 T180 has 64k mls and to my knowledge hasn't had an engine change, but still runs well with no oil or coolant loss issues.

It could have had some engine work done by a previous owner, OR I've been extremely lucky (touch wood);~)

J ..cleaning the EGR is an easy DIY job, there is a massive guide on it if you do a search.

Paul....methinks our mucker "J" has gone past the stage of cleaning his EGR, and eagerly awaits that great British festival of 5th November, when the kids at his door ask him if he has "anything for the guy".......

......Rav 4 parked in a bonfire, J.........?

I wouldn't get to surgery until the fuel filter has been changed. Ask Webblers what a difference it makes.

Thanks for the comments all, the first engine work (+new EGR) was done in June 2011, the head gasket then went around Dec 2011 and was re-done again.

The fuel filter was replaced this Jan and last time I looked the EGR only had a light dusting so I decided to leave until next service.

Anyhows, after forking out another £700 today for a new injector we had a drive in the new Rav so I think this is what we are going to go for in Invincible spec as its the nearest to the T180. Am a little concerned its the same 2.2 but from looking on these forums anything after 2009 has been sorted - I hope! I have to say that one of the reasons we decided to buy another is that the aftersales service from our local Toyota dealer is exemplary and this goes a long way in our books when it comes to making major decisions.

So hopefully I will be able to post up soon on how the new one is, from the test drive we had today I was very impressed, the drive was much quieter and all the controls were nice and light again. We will be sorry to see the T180 go but just cant afford to maintain it any longer :(

For info we got £6250 on a trade in where other garages were offering £4500. I know its all about how much profit they have but when you factor in the £1000 deposit contribution on top then it stacked into a good deal for us :)

Hi Charlie, just to reply to your questions,

The Engine had stopped using oil so I thought things were all good.

The rebuild was done at 79,600 and its now covered 110,000 so nearly 30 thou since the original engine work.

I always run my motors on branded fuel, never supermarket and every now and again I fill up with the 'advanced' type diesel with all the supposed cleaning additives etc.

Probably the best way forward.

No use throwing good money after bad, although the T180's spec is a hard act to follow.

My local RRG also offers great service.

Enjoy the new Rav.

Thanks for that info.. It helps ..

So once again it turns out another "Rebuild" has gone pear shaped... Shame.

I consider myself lucky in the greater scheme of things as in 2/12 years or more and apart from engine replacements my car has cost me very little..

Exhaust £1000

Clutch (My choice) £300

Plus tyres and a set of brake pads and discs (Front)

And the usual oil and filters and stuff ...

My car is running fantastically now ?(fingers crossed) and the best it ever has.. I keep looking though at the last of the old shape SRs as for me they were and still are the best Ra4 built to date.. I don't really use this car but when winter comes if it does living here in the sticks will mean a 4X4 will be...Well almost a necessity .. Trouble is this house purchase and its ongoing development has sucked the pot a wee bit dry and I aint having finance in any shape...

I really hope you enjoy your new car.. They really are the dogs gonads !!

Oh and fear not ! The engines from the advent of the 150BHP version have been just fine.. There is no way Toyota would be still allowing problems.. I would buy one of the 150s without a moments hesitation !

Coorrr....Look at this one....

Looks a bit like my nicked one! And .... It is also newer, with similar miles and priced at least £1,500 below the book price, based on the settlement I got from insurers on my '11 plate (assuming that insurers are not in habit of over-paying on claims!)

My Daughters Peugeot 206 was recently written off and the insurance offered and paid more than she paid for it 18 months previously.... Stunned we were...

I do like that white one on the trader.. Its mileage is not low but not low either.. May give the Dealer a ring .......
