Reverse Parking Sensors

Parking sensors give a constant tone even when nothing at rear of car.

I have disconnected the module ( proper Toyota system) from all four sensors and the constant tone is still there, so I assume the module is faulty.

The car is under Toyota Approved Used warranty but the supplying dealer has said that the parking system is an accessory and as such not included in the warranty. They want to charge me £50+ just to look at the problem, The same dealer has looked after my wifes last Rav4 for five years under a service agreement so they know we are good customers of theirs. The system was already fitted before I bought the car.

Looking at the Toyota Approved Used Benefits, Toyota state that the only exclusions are Wear and tear service maintenance items, Battery, Exhaust corrosion and Damage and wear and tear to trim and bodywork.

Two questions. Has anyone experience of the system to confirm my diagnosis and can anyone comment on the dealer refusal to rectify under the warranty.

I have disabled the system by removing the fuse for the time being.

Dealers don't you just love them.

They sold you a car and warranty, with reverse sensors there, and working for a reason. These have broken within the warranty period, and you are a repeat Toyota customer. They should fix the bloody things. If not, name and shame the piles of widdle, and take yer custom elsewhere, Bryan.

Ah have spoked.....

I had a similar comment about "accessory and so not covered" when the end caps fell off the chrome bars on my RAV4.2 which I had bought 2nd hand as an approved used car from the main dealer

I told them as far as I was concerned, they came with the car and as they were not listed as an exclusion (Toyota make a big point of saying they list exclusions, not inclusions), it should be covered. They did agree with not much persuasion and suppled new caps.

I think you should push for them to be fixed FOC!

Thanks for the replies and especially anchorman for the faults pdf. Much appreciated.

Will have another look tomorrow using the flow charts.

Car goes back to the dealer on Monday to have the corroded earth strap replaced and i will have a 'polite discussion' re warranty and see where we go from there.

Car was in today and the earth strap replaced ok.

Checked with Toyota Customer Services and the dealer was in fact correct re the sensors. A Toyota Approved Used warranty only applies to original equipment fitted at the factory prior to delivery to first owner. Any extras fitted for the first or subsequent owners prior to the issue of an approved Used warranty are not covered by that warranty. So in my case the sensors although Toyota branded and fitted by a Toyota dealer prior to my purchasing the used car are not covered by the warranty.

Have solved the sensor problem myself using Anchormans pdf. Thanks again for your help. Much appreciated.

Personally, I think the Toyota Customer Service explanation, while accurate as far as they are concerned, is nonsense if they don't list what was not fitted at the factory and therefore excluded.

I bet when they advertised the car for sale, as well as pushing the fact it was a Toyota Approved Used Car, they promoted the fact it had reversing sensors ?!

A slight aside, but kind of related, when I bought my Celica quite a few years ago, it was an official Approved Used Car, and it had a Toyota Alarm fitted, but the dealer stated that that was excluded from the warranty as it was an accessory (so up front I knew), however it started playing up going off at random times immediately after I bought the car and the dealer STILL looked at it FOC and gave me a car to use for a few days in the meantime, and in the end replaced the alarm. It is THAT kind of service that makes people come back again, not quoting the T&Cs to their loyal clientele to avoid doing a bit of gratis work.

Bryan min.......with utmost respect, if YOU were able to fix, so was the lazy Far King dealer......it goes under the heading of Customer Service, becoming a very old fashioned outdated thing nowadays. Most service managers are descendants of Pontius Pilate, and are well trained in the word NO. To date, I have not had this experience from new service manager at Arnie Toyota, Bishopbriggs, Glesga, and you all know ah can moan for Scotland.

First paragraph of Hoovie's post above totally spot on.
