With the joys of father hood my son has come of driving age :disgust: and was looking at getting a car, originally he thought he was getting to drive my Avensis :doctor: . But has decided to get an Auris we been looking at 1.4 and the 2.0 d-4ds and was i looking to know if the 1.4 is abit under powered, and what the fuel consumtion is like on both models. Any advise and coments would be most helpful.

As a first car the 1.4 would be fine, esp. if he's been learning in the same sort of crappy underpowered car I learned in

Generally, if you drive the 1.4 like it is a petrol (i.e. don't be afraid to use the revs) then it's fine to drive. It's a bit more lethargic when loaded or on the motorway but is otherwise fine.

The 2.0 has a lot more torque and you can just drive it at low revs all the time and it'll easily handle it. It's also more refined on the motorway as it can be run at higher gears (And in fact has a 6th gear).

The 1.4 is cheaper to tax by about £20 a year and has a slightly higher mpg than the 2.0.

One thing with the 2.0 is I think it has the same engine that has had DPF and oil-burning issues in the Avensis so a bit more research would be worth it. The 1.4 D4D engine is the same one that is in the Yaris and has been proven to be pretty bullet-proof so far. (Obviously it's more fun in the Yaris tho' :P :D)

I would say generally speaking that a first car shouldn't be anything too powerful, you want them to gain some experience before putting them in some thing fast.

my first car was a 1.4, i then went down till i was on a 998cc, my 1.8 auris is my first car above 1.4. so i would say go for the 1.4.

I dont mind Diesels, but i always find they remind me of driving a van due to the choppy sound they make..... i guess it depends on if you want to hear him trying to sneak in at 3am :D

Diesels are good first cars to have as they are much more forgiving and harder to stall than petrols.

Good for building confidence, although a switch to petrol will be harder later then (I can hold my Yaris on a hill with just the clutch pedal; You can't do that in a petrol car!)

Cheaper to insure and tax too!

(Hint: Put his mum and gran on the insurance as named drivers to get it lower, esp. if they will never drive the car! Although this may not work now due to the stupid gender discrimination crap that was recently introduced )

Thanks for the reply's guys/gals :drunk: @ Cyker I know this country away to the dogs on a shoe string women aren't even women any more. Going to take the 1.4 for a spin to see what she like in the power compartment took the 2.0 out yesterday and got to say she was a nice driving car.

Have fun :)

The Toyota D4D engines are very underrated IMHO; They don't look the best on paper but unlike a lot of diesel engines they have a very flat torque curve which makes them a joy to drive :)

I'm not looking forward to the change to BMW diesel engines, which tend to be more peaky (nothingnothingnothingPOWERchangegear) and have a reputation for turbo failure

I have the 1.4 D4D Auris, had it two years and done 80k miles.

The MPG is mid 60s, having 6 gears helps here, it's been a great car, no problems to sort out and it's been utterly reliable.

No problems keeping up on the motorway, the only time you notice the lack of power is in on a long hill, then you have to change down to keep up the momentum.

Not driven the 2.0 but I would be happy to recommend the 1.4, great car and ideal for a new driver.

Cyker is it not the 1.4 d-4d engines that have the dpf problem or is it both ? .

Thanks for the reply Runningin that's pretty good fuel consumption 80k miles you do average milage then :dontgetit: , didn't get out in the 1.4 today got tied down with work but hoping to get tomorrow morning your comments have gave me some reassurance about the 1.4 Runningin im quite looking forward to taking it for a spin.

Any car with a DPF can develop a 'DPF issue', esp if driven exclusively in town, but the problem I was referring to was specific to the AD engines which are the 2.0 and 2.2 D4D engines; See here:
