I have left a deposit on a Hiace Super Custom Limited 2.4.

I have falling in love with this bus,and sold my VW caravelle T4 to buy

it..but on reading many members threads here on the toyota owners

club it seems that this may well have been a big mistake due to the

running costs and the head problems with the 2.4 unit, plus insurance

and the availablty of parts...help please thanks in advance larry

Hi

I recommend Tesco for insurance, very reasonable.

Cooling problem can a problem, make sure you get a warranty on your vehicle, then take it for a good long hard run if it going to overheat it will be when the motor is working hard.

As for a drive I like mine a lot despite the problems, it cost me quite a lot but I personally think it worth it.:yes:

What is the history of this vehicle, is it a new import or what?

HI Simon

thanx for your reply :D ....this bus that i'm going for is a privite deal..the bus was imported 9months ago...it has service history from then...I am very capable of any work to be done including total engine rebuild..excluding machining..

So just need to sort out the cooling problem then eh?.

how tight is the rad in the bus? can a kenlow be fitted, evern if with only switch operated, better than nothing eh?

thanx for your reply Simon seems a great sight this .....rgds larry

If this is a private sale take it for a good run on the motorway, at least 75 mph for 20 miles ( if it's possible in the UK these days  ), watch the guage like a hawk, if it wavers beware, if there are any signs of overheating walk away, make sure the heater output is burning hot, prime place for an air lock the heater is higher than the block. I know from bitter experience, this was the first sign I missed. :crybaby::crybaby: :censor:

Is the dash digital on yours, I have the 3.0 SCL and it is a digital dash, my temp guage never goes above midway, (now :crybaby: ).

Space? well there is a question, the kenlowe comes as a kit which includes a proper thermostat which is adjustable, the mondeo is cheaper but it does require some ingenuity, it also offers 2 speeds, but it will require fan removal if the rad is not being taken out, you could keep both if fitting a push fan, it could go in the tunnel

My thoughts on getting rid of the viscous fan are reliablility, added consumption and the woosh of the fan, if the kenlowe helps with 2/3 I shall be happy, you do need to remove the viscous unit though.

I always have mine worked on by a garage, I am a techie and don't like to work on cars, my preference, I can, but don't like to B)

Yeah I am glad I found this place I have had some good help here and some sympathy when it all went belly up too  , I also use Ace answers a link is in here in the similar threads, also specifically for the supercustoms is a yahoo group, (I have pictures of my old girl on there)again link here somewhere.

Good luck mate!

As an aside if worried about the head or gasket get the coolant sniffed.

I can personally recommend UK cylinderheads, good deal, great delivery times too!

I shouldn't worry too much about the spares, much of the stuff is generic and hence fully available from decent automotive factors, the longest wait I have had was waiting for glass to arrive from japan when the wrong side was sent
