Diesel Leak

Hi all.

Filled up with Vpower today.

An hour after returning home noticed a small patch of diesel on the drive below the fuel filler cap.

On investigation the pipe from the filler neck to where it joins the angled plastic section going to the fuel tank (joined by a jubilee clip) appears to be quite badly corroded, and the probable source of the leak.

Two questions..

1.Is it safe to drive.

2.Is replacing the pipe a big job and best left to MrT or is it a possible DIY job.

Thanks Paul

Doesn't have to be mr T but I think I might run it round to a local garage and just get their opinion. It is not easy for us without seeing it.

Thanks,yes it's difficult without pics.

The pipes corroded where it joins the plastic section going into the fuel tank, which is protected by a corrugated plastic sleave just in from the rear jacking point.

I'll get my mechanic mate to check it out, thanks.

I can see the reason for Bothy's Classic original Ravs having had this fault, but a 2006 car corroding at such an important area..?

Hmmm take your point Kev. It's not good.

Was thinking the same myself, but that small section of pipe being nearside under the car does get a soaking.

Maybe my car had a past life in that Aberdeenshire where the roads are grit salted for 8 months of the year.;~}

It's with Mr T atm.

I've asked them to save the rusted fuel pipe,so I will post a pic when it comes back.

£51 non refundable diagnostics charge before they even start.

IMO that should be refunded if they do the job.

I thought diagnostics was refunded or should I say not charged if the job carried out ? Otherwise I had better start charging for our guys appraising a job before they start ? One major reason NOT to use that dealer ??

Fuel pishing out car at its tank spout when brim filled........ah left school at 15, but could easily work out, after my superb Toyota Tech Training (TTT), what the F the problem was without incurring 51GBP of diagnostics time (45 minutes.....?) I await ma mucker Kingo's input with tredipation........

I would not need to charge you to look at your roof to tell you a tile has slipped or fallen out.. If I were to charge the companys customers to do this we as a company would have no customers..

Why on earth do they need to charge for the inspection of such an item as a fuel pipe ? From memory when dopey here filled his car with petrol the pipes were easily seen by kneeling down on the floor ? It took us less than an hour to drain the blooming thing..

When My exhaust went the dealer offered to take a look at the princely sum of 72 quid. This was offered as a refundable fee IF I had the work done there.. My answer was the !Removed! thing is blowing and falling apart so may I venture the opinion its knackered ? Would you kindly offer me a HUGE discount as I apparently have saved you a very technical job ?

Sorry but I would not get into dealings with such a company..

Of course if labour charges could be justified by way of time stripping to investigate then fine.. But if the item is stripped then time should be taken into consideration as it would have needed stripping to find the initial problem.

Quick Update..

Spoken very nicely to RRG this morning and explained to them that as a loyal customer who bought a new Rav from them last year, together with a full service plan, and recently had an £850 exhaust fitted to my T180,a non refundable diagnostic charge was unfair.

The upshot being they have kindly waived the charge AND knocked 30% of the cost of fitting a new fuel pipe, which now comes in at £270 all in..So fair play to RRG.

Just goes to show that if you don't ask, you don't get..Customer loyalty obviously matters to them.

They said the fuel pipe was a fairly unusual fault, but not unheard of.

And going by the price of a far king piece of fuel pipe, the remaining 50 months warranty on Funnerburd Wan becomes even more appealing.......or could it be an "exception".....LOL

Agreed, £172 for a fuel pipe ain't cheap, but like the mid section exhaust box it's a dealer only part.

So they have you by the cort an shurleys.

The need for your warranty has been voided by a liberal coat of tetroseal - sorry!

We charge investigation work.......but only where something needs time to strip or be hooked up to the diagnostics. Too many people come in to get a diagnosis, get a freebie off us then go and buy a part off fleabay and do the job themselves, thats why we now charge. If we get the job and have only spent a short time to diagnose, then we take it off the bill, but not where it has taken hours to arrive at a diagnosis

Charging for diagnostics is fair, what isn't fair is being told the charge wasn't refundable if they did the job!

In the event RRG are doing the repair, did waive the charge, and gave me a discount.

Maybe my initial conversation could have been with a new recruit who hadn't been given the training yet.

TBF to my local RRG they have in the past always given 1st class service,so they always get my custom.

Some positive news on Toyota dealers for a change.

RRG Bolton have done an excellent job replacing my rusted fuel pipe.

Completed on time and rang me to say it was ready, explained in full what they did,and even showed me the old corroded fuel pipe.

Mechanic said in his 10 yrs with Toyota it was the first one he'd ever done, but that water must have been spraying on to the pipe through a 15mm gap between the wheel arch and the little mud flap to the front of the rear wheel at the bottom of the arch which he said is there to protect the fuel pipe from spray.I always wondered why it was there!

Obviously in my case it hasn't done its job.

Full marks to this particular dealer.

RRG are very good regarding customer care, our December 2009 Yaris with 60k miles on had a very slight rumble developing on a rear wheel bearing last week, dropped the car in at 9 a.m, collected at 4p.m the same day, job done, no charge after RRG phoned Mr T and saved me £560.00 !....... Dealer history is so worthwhile !

Oh and not forgetting the small matter that we have now bought three Ravs from them;~)

You could call that customer loyalty.
