Tyres

I have a fairly newish Geolander on the rear passenger side which I noticed had two cuts in the side wall, obviously they haven't gone all the way through as I didn't get a flat, but they are there and measure about 1.5 centimetres. Knowing there was no chance of having it repaired I took it along to a local tyre company - not one the big chains, this guy has a reputation for fixing before trying to sell new ones. He confirmed that whilst it could be repaired it would be illegal etc, so I asked him for a quote for the same brand. THe cheapest he could find me one at would be £145 fitted, but then tried his hardest to sell me an 'unbranded' tyre which he claimed were perfectly good and just didn;t have the branding, he said this would only cost £70. In the end, although tempted, I stuck with the Geolander which he is fitting tomorrow.

I just wondered if anyone has ever had an unbranded tyre on and what they thought about it. Really not happy that a tyre with years of tread but has two small slits has to be discarded and will cost me £145...just before an MOT where I know I need rear brake shoes and possibly pads!

I have a very good geolander G91A which is surplus, we had a puncture on one of our cars so I put two new ones on. Drop me a P.M if it's of any use. Not sure where in Yorkshire you are, i'm 5 minutes off Junction 22 M62.

Thanks Denshaw, out of weird loyalty, I had better get the one from the tyre place...this guy has fixed loads fro me over the years and he has ordered the Geolander specially in for me tomorrow, but if I need another I'll check with you first and I may do as the other rear tyre has a very slow leak which I have to top up every 14 days!

I'm not far from you (Brighouse) so wouldn;t be a problem!

Okey Dokey Mate, £145 seems pretty reasonable for one tyre, I seem to recall we paid £140 (ish) each for four Geolanders last year.

I would stick with the Geolanders. Tyres are the only contact between the car and road so worth replacing one with cuts in the sidewall to keep you and your passengers safe.
