Good Fully Synthetic Oil

My Avensis is burning oil at about a quart every 4500 - 5000 miles. When I had it serviced my mechanic used an oil which was in a huge container so not sure what brand it was or if it was any good.

What I am trying to find out is that is there a particular brand anyone can recommended which is slightly better suited to an older car that is burning oil?

Thanks

Mo

First of all I wouldn't bother using expensive fully synthetic oil in a high mileage non-performance engine. It's a waste of money to be honest. A good quality semi-synthetic will do absolutely fine. Stick to the AP numbers suggested in your handbook/manual & it'll be fine. It doesn't have to be Castrol or any of the big names to do the job, just to have reached the qualifying standard for it's AP rating. Fully synthetic oils in higher mileage engines can also start to 'use up' or burn the oil - because it's so slippy, it effectively escapes past the pistons & ends up down the exhaust pipe. I know this from a very highly respected engine tuner.

Thanks for the replies, engine is 1AZ-FSE which is a 2.0 litre petrol. I was just trying to find out if certain brands are better for older engines? the millage is about 82,000.

Whatever the engine, you need the right spec.... don't assume synthetic is better then chip oil .... you must check the specs and get the right one for your engine.

As for Brands, Comma is my choice, but halfrauds is also ok (if they have a deal on) .... again, check the specs, that's the ONLY tip worth taking away.

10w40 semi synthetic comma will help your oil consumption!

10W/40 for 82000 miles? It will kill engine.

Any choice of ACEA A5/B5 HC 5W/30 oil:

Valvoline, Liqui Moly, Elf.

Don't use Castrol.

It makes me smile when I see posts to use this oil, don't use that one. It's the same with brakes. People make their choice and think nothing else will do!

What you need to do is find the right grade for your car, 5w 30 or whatever and then the right specification, API CF, or the ACEA A5/B5 C2 or whatever spec your car needs. Then look at the brands. I would always stick to the well known branded suppliers. To say never use Castrol or Esso or whatever is a load of nonsense, go with the best deal you can find to the right specification

10w40 will kill a 1.8vvti? lol - if you look at the handbook, it pretty much lets you use most weights of oil 20w50 to 0w30 from what I remember - when we had the vvtli 1.8 T-Sport 2 local Toyota dealers only used 10w40 on vvtis, most likely to help hold off the oil consumption - I only put 10w40 in my vvtli and it gave no bother and it was regularly exercised, believe me!

Don't use Castrol? No offence but are you serious? Castrol is one of the better oils out there! The only oil BMW recommend, so I'd safely say it would do a good job in a 1.8vvti.

Asking about oil has opened a can of worms! Lol

I was just trying to find out if a particular brand was any better for an older engine that's all.

Thanks for the replies

There are actually oils out there which are specifically made for higher mileage engines - you should find them in Halfords, Autosave, Partco, etc, etc. Any decent retailer really ......

Just get one which suits the AP ratings for your car, as already suggested :)
