Wheel Spacers - T180

I am mulling over the idea of fitting some spacers to my existing alloys. I have always thought that the T180 arches look a bit big and are designed for bigger wider wheels. Has anyone fitted spacers to a 4.3 model.

What are people's advice / opinions on these as I have never used them before?

No idea what the effect would be on the 4WD system or what it would look like but longer wheel bolts would definitely be needed................

Was thinking of H&R hub centric, they bolt on to existing studs, and then provide new studs so you can use existing bolts.

I really like the look, but wouldn't go as wide, was thinking 25mm per side. Wonder what the stress on bearings would be.

Nah........

Spoilsport!

LOL Lee........when ye tell yer insurance foax, they will ask lots more questions than they would of, e.g. , a Lindop Chip Kit ah would wager. They would have the implication of Boyraceritis, IMHO, and would constitute a major non standardness.

OH has spacers on his weekend toy, and IMHO it looks so much better.. and handles better...

I did think about them for the RAV, but was told it would *** up the wheel bearings.. so decided not to.. :o

So, who's going to be first ? :)

Hopefully I have that covered on the insurance front, because I use a downsized alloy(17") with my winter tyres, LV cover charge me for wheel modification (£31). I would think that wheel spacers could be encompassed with that as it does not specify what has been done.

When I rang them about the chip they wouldn't cover me at first, however i managed to get the style pack/side steps not to be classed as a mod(they charged me £31 for these). As they were toyota dealer fitted options this was deemed ok.

They allow two modifications only.

That's my concern, however when you look at other forums it seems that lots of people have used them without issues. I was hoping for someone to pipe up and say .."no problem used them on mine with no issues"

I'll be taking my wife's car into a bodyshop next week for alloy refurb, headlight polishing, and chip removal, so I will ask them for an opinion as they specialise in body kit installation.

Is it possible the US RAV's have different/stronger wheel bearings coz they are bigger ?

The only folk who can give a true answer would be mechanical/structural engineers, after doing lots of sums Lee........................

Don't want to be a kill joy,but IMO most after market modifications from standard nearly always have a knock on effect to other parts on the car.

eg. lowering suspension or fitting wider wheels.

You could be opening a can of worms.

Don't do it Liz, as we all know what the next question will be.

Does my bum look big in this :)

Big Kev :)

lol..

Maybe my "bum" is wide enough as it is...

Anyways, totally skint atm... and when I do have some funds, a twin exhaust for the new skirt is next...

This thing with adding to the forces and the leverage of said forces worries me... This was a thing we did with Minis and the like when god was a lad.. Back the us young ones would be smiling with the looks of our cars with wheels sticking out.. But the amount of damage done was just incredible.. Lest also remember the cost of repairing those stressed parts on such a vehicle ?

Widan ? I share Kevs sentiments and it just shows the marketplace they are aiming the kit at.... Not for me sorry.

Been using 20mm spacers on my Ibiza Cupra for 50,000 miles with no problem. I know there is a considerable weight difference in the Rav & Ibiza but extra stresses are placed on the Ibiza when doing track days. Checked the rear wheel bearings & they are still fine.

  • 1 month later...

Going to add them at the time I change over to my winter tyres/alloys. It's going to be 25mm all round, or maybe 30mm on back.

It wouldn't be something i would do either to be honest. Manufacturers spend millions of pounds designing a vehicle and the technical development people calculate stresses and tolerances with incredible accuracy. Something like this can affect the whole balance and drivability of the car as well as causing premature wear in driveline components.

With all due respect I really wouldn't bother.

More to the point, those tolerances are the bare minimum in order to save costs so there is little if any margin for error when making dynamic changes such as this.
