oooh... sounds easy... especially if i can do it myself...

got any more info/pics etc ???

ta ! .. my motor's due for ANOTHER oil change !

a good thing tho is that I'm no longer commuting 70miles a day for work... :)

come on then...provide us with instructions and a pic and we can have a go ourselves

I took some pics while doing my oil change, but they're not really good or detailed to be of any use to anyone :(

Also, it's complicated a bit by the fact that on earlier engines the oil filter is in a different place (halfway up the engine on revs1&2, near the bottom on rev3+).

This is quite good though:

Although you won't need a SST (Special Service Tool) to remove the old oil filter - you should be able to remove it by hand - unless you're a wuss :D

If it don't come off by hand :ffs: , poke a screwdriver through it and then twist it. Kinda like....

... ermmm.... well it does work.

oil filter as said under a tenner with sump gasket, get the toyota one as the filter is different from the Halfords ones as they keep some oil in the filter when the car isnt running, piece of pop to do as said numerous times on thread :)

Been out, got all the parts (oil filter & sump gasket cost £9.59 from my local Mr.T) and had a little look when i got home and damn :!Removed!: looks a bit af a :censor: for me to attempt to do it! plus, i've just found that i dont have a jack! anyway, i just phoned my local Mr.T and asked them what they would charge me to do it for me and they said £20+vat which i make to be :hokus-pokus: £23.50! thats not to bad is it?? ??

i've just found that i dont have a jack!

u dont need one fella, reasonably easy to slide your arm under the car and remove the sump plug, and more than enough room for a container to drain the old oil into.

maybe use an old 4.5 or 5 litre oil carton on its side with the lid on and cut out a section on its side to let the old oil drain into, then carefully slide it out when full and use loadsa gaffer tape to cover the hole, then take it to an authorised disposer - most council dumpit sites do this for ya

I think it depends on the year of the car on whether or not you need a jack.

The sump plug should be possible to get off without a jack, but the oil filter is not at the bottom of the engine on rev1/2 as it is on the rev3+.

Also, even on the rev3+ there's a piece of undertray covering the oil filter - 2 of the bolts aren't that easy (not impossible though) to get to without lifting the car.

There's a 'how to' on IMOC on how to change the oil on a mk1 - it's not that much different on the mk2 (or indeed any other car).

oil filter £ 7 + vat , crush washer 70p , and filter does have slow return valve built in. Halfords ones dont

i Can see the sump plug using a mirror, it's the oil filter i can't see :crybaby:

The oil filter is probaby (I don't know for sure!) on the front of the engine - that is, between the engine and the seats. If it's in a similar place to a Mazda 323 (the only other car I've done an oil change on) it'll be reachable by hand when under the car.

So I don't see it being possible without a jack. Unless others have managed it from the top of the engine (but this was impossible on the 323)...?

ps. I've assumed in my post above that your car in the one in your pic - a rev1/2.
