Avensis Heater

I bought my 2006 Avensis 2.0 D4d T3x at the end of April and for the first time this week I have used the heater. It works OK but when the temperature is set above 16 the revs at idle increase to 1000/1200 until it reaches normal temperature and then it idles at about 800 again. Is this normal ? My last car a Peugeot 406 HDi idled faster from cold but the heater setting did not affect it.

yes, it's normal.

It'll also happen if you add other electrical loads e.g. demister, a/c etc.
