Problem With Remote Unlock/disarm

Avensis Verso 2002 2.0vvti

This is a strange one, once the car is unlocked and disarmed we can use the remote to lock/unlock the doors and set the alarm. After a while (we don't know exactly how long but it's over an hour), the remote won't unlock. We can unlock the car with the key, open the door and set off the alarm then after a couple of seconds the remote will disarm the alarm. The remote will now work fine again for a while then will stop working.

I'd be very grateful for any ideas.
