The vehicle’s owner looks on as firefighters prepare to extract his car

We’ve all mis-read a sat nav but unfortunately for the driver of this Citroën people carrier, it was simply his ‘local knowledge’ to blame.

The motorist was attempting to avoid road closures, but got in a bit of a pickle when he realised – too late – that the alleyway he was trying to navigate could not be driven down.

He had ignored travel advice from a police community support officer about fallen cables on a road ahead and instead tried to look for his own shortcut but ended up being winched from a set of stairs.

The car began to tumble down the steps and hit the wall to its left, coming to a stop after being wedged in.

A bewildered local resident who was walking down the steps at the time called the fire brigade and eventually the stricken Xsara Picasso was hoisted to its rescue.

The incident happened at one end of Carnsmerry Crescent which leads to Carlyon Road, in St Austell, Cornwall.

‘There was not any serious damage to the car but I think his pride was a little bit dented,’ fire crew manager Tim Lean said.
