Mystery Oil Leak

Hi!

I have a mystery oil leak on my 2001 Avensis 2.0L VVTi, I can see it dripping down the sump when it's at it's worst, but can't see where from:

When the engine is running, there is no dripping oil, when I stop it begins to drip oil for about 15 Mins then stops, it leaves a fairly big splodge of oil in the parking space, but not enough to make any discernible difference to the oil level, I drove over 200 miles at the weekend with no oil loss until I stopped.

Is there a breather pipe or something that could be causing this as I'd assume a seal would leak just as much, if not more, when the engine is running?

Car is only just over the 100,000 mark, with FSH (by a main dealer!) up to 90,000 & only 1 other owner who owned it up until a year ago, and the raft of receipts that came with the car shows it's had a lot of TLC & no expense spared so it's a great car for it's age, just making a mess on my driveway!!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Get underneath and have a look. Post a photo.

It could be a variety of things. Cam cover gasket - sump seal - oil filter seal. Are you sure its engine oil? Could be a failed drive-shaft seal. It won't improve and will need to be fixed. It's unlikely to be a major issue though.

are you sure its oil and not the air con drain just making a puddle on the floor?

Definately Oil!

Hopefully I'll get it on the ramps & have a good look from underneath this week!
