Intermittent Problem With Headlights When Indicators Are Used.

I have a 4 door 1998 Rav 4-GX and last week I noticed
the headlights would sometimes go out when I used the left hand
indicator. I have been told this 'may' be due to an earthing problem
so I have checked all obvious ones which seem in order. I then searched
the web, and other forums stated a common problem was the indicator
stalk. I have therefore purchased an indicator stalk from a salvage yard
who sells on E bay, only to find after being told it was compatible it did not
fit. To my surprise I also noted the
indicator stalk was on the right whereas my indicator is on the left. I have since obtained the part number which
is 17A089C, and further searches on the web show that these have been fitted to
Mazda’s, as well as Toyota Camry / Avensis.

My question is two fold;

1 - Does anyone know of a reason other than a bad earth, or
faulty indicator stalk why my headlights turn off whilst the indicator is in
use.

2- Will the indicator stalk from a Mazda /Toyota Avensis /
Toyota Camry work if it has the same part number

Thank You,

Badiatedalda.

Hi,

Had a very similar problem on a Rav 4 2008 model, at night when indicating ( was only one way but cannot remember which ) half way round the corner the dipped beam would turn off leaving me on side lights only. The dipped beam returned when the steering wheel centred and the indicator cancelled. This came as a big surprise to say the least, it was not a one off event and eventually happened every time.

The local Toyota dealer traced it to a faulty copper connecting on the indicator stalk. Once replaced it cured the problem. This happened just before the 3 year warranty expired so I have no idea of the cost.

This was the only fault in 3 years, pretty pleased with it.

Hope this assists you.

Regards SteveC.
