No Fish Stories- What Do You Really Get?

(Hope this aint cheatin.. I also posted this exact letter on another forum- bad boy!)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ :unsure:
Are folks actually getting 40 mpg ?
See some posts talking about 40+ on the highway ...and then others complaining about high 20s. Interested in knowing what is really REALISTIC? Under ideal conditions, is forty mpg the magic number that most Corollas should be capable of? Are there certain year and engine models that do much better or worse? . Is it safe to assume that auto/manual tranny has very little impact on mileage anymore?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I'm still playing with a mileage drop. Done everything recommended-

At one point typically ran 37/38 hway and maybe even touched 39. Not anymore. 31 - 33 highway. Car now has 50K.- '99 LE auto. 1.8l 1ZZ-FE -

Last check was about 34 highway.

I'm still happy with that but I want to know for sure that this is the best it's capable of. Can anybody beat it and should I reasonably expect more? Do later models with VVT do better?

In S.E. Mass we just started hitting a buck eighty for regular. Still not that bad when you compare it to a gallon of milk!

Thanks

We're paying like.... $2.10 out here in the Western US. In my 97 AE101 I get about 300-some-odd miles out of 10 gallons. And that's in town. I'm sure it's way higher than that on the interstate. We drove from Reno to San Francisco on half a tank. I can't seem to find out how many miles that is....

((Hold Please.... :bye::bye::bye::bye: ))

Ok. Roughly 230 miles. So 230 miles on half a tank (5 gallons) I got 46 miles to the gallon. I'm assuimg it's pretty close to being accurate. And I don't have VVTl-I

I can get close to 40 mpg if i drive a steady non stop journey. But i do have the bonus of the 6 speed which keeps the revs lower. :)

I was also looking at some people higher gas mileages, but I have a theory.

I think several people posting here are not using the US measure, but the

Import measure when talking about miles per gallon. In the United Kingdom and

other countries, the Imp. measure is used and our owner's manual has the equivalent, at least my owner's manual, for the capacities of the fuel tank and the motor oil.

For example, the US measure for one gallon is 1 gallon = 3.785 liters or 3.8 lts

if its rounded.

The Import measure is 1 gallon = 4.546 liters, or 4.55 rounded

And now, more exactly. If I use the US measure for one of the averages on my 2004 Toyota Corolla, the average is:

407.3 miles/42.683 liters = 9.54244 miles per liter (3.785 liters) = 36.12 mpg (US)

Or, 407.3 miles/11.27688 gals = 36.12 mpg (US)

But, if use the Import measure, the results are:

407.3 miles/42.683 liters=9.54244 miles per liter(4.546 liters) = 43.38 mpg (Imp)

Or, 407.3 miles/9.38913 gals = 43.38 mpg (Imp)

The overall fuel economy of my car, and I am keeping records since I took the car from the dealer, is:

3,467.9 miles/392.908 liters = 8.826239 miles per liter (3.785) = 33.41 mpg (US)

Using the Imp, measure, the overall fuel economy of my 2004 Toyota Corolla is:

3,467.9 miles / 86.429388 gals = 40.12 miles per gallon (Imp)

To clarify, to change the liters into gallons, divide the amount of liters by 3.785 or 4.546, and you will obtain the US measure and the Imp. measure respectively.

If not, multiply the result of the division of miles and liters by 3.785 or 4.546 and you will obtain the US measure and the Imp. measure for miles per gallon respectively. I found that is more exact to use 4.546, instead of 4.55 liters for the Import measure, and the liters are the same for the US and for the United Kingdom.

My theory is that my car is giving me 33.41 mpg, but also 40.12 mpg if I use the

Import measure. My 2004 Toyota Corolla has a 4 speed automatic, and a 1.8 lts

VVT-i engine. I use my car on mixed driving conditions here in Puerto Rico, sometimes with the air conditioner on, but I avoid using the a/c when is not necessary and I keep the tires at the correct cold tire pressure.

Maybe you disgree and if that is the case, please explain so I can learn also. Maybe I am doing something wrong, but maybe I am correct.

My 2004 Toyota Corolla is rated at 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway by the EPA

of the United States. The same 2004 Corolla is rated at 32 mpg city and 40 mpg

on the highway with the 5 speed manual transmission.

Thanks :thumbsup:

In my AE92 on a long motorway journey I can get a max of 33 MPG (UK) or 6.1 MPL (UK).

In start-sprint-stop traffic I get about 23.5 MPG (UK) or 5.1 MPL (UK).

Personally I think it's :censor: !!!!
