Has Your Toyota Dealer Reported Non Existing Faults

Recommended Posts

I bought my 57 reg Aygo 3 years ago from a Toyota main dealer with a 3 year service plan.

Took it for its 3rd service 2 weeks ago. they reported that I need a new anti roll bar bush at a cost of £135.00. Took it for its MOT this morning and reported to the tester that it probably has a faulty anti roll bar bush. The car passed its MOT and the tester said there was nothing at all wrong with the anti roll bar bush.

On its 2nd service the air bag warning light was lit. They reported it needed a new air bag ecu at a cost of £350. I took the car to an auto electrician to look at the fault. It took him less than 5 minutes to fix the fault and there was no charge.

Will I take my Aygo to be serviced at a Toyota main dealer again - never

Will I buy another Toyota car - never

I had the same airbag warning light in 2010. Toyota Dealer wanted over £200 to repair but a garage fixed it free of charge.

As with any dealer network, there are good and not so good examples of customer service, etc.

Reminds me of a 3 year old Honda we had, where the extended warranty included MOT Insurance. The car failed its first MOT on the front suspension bushes, and the dealer said they weren't covered under the MOT insurance as it was wear and tear. I phoned Honda, who confirmed wear and tear didn't come into it, the car had failed its MOT on the front suspension which was covered under the MOT insurance - so I got the Honda engineer to speak to the dealer. So we paid the £10 MOT insurance excess rather than the £125 repair bill for the front suspension bushes (at 1997 prices the repair was actually quite expensive).

As regards the airbag light, this wasn't a non-existent fault - if it had occurred this year it would have probably meant an MOT failure. Perhaps it is more typical of dealer technicians not properly investigating faults and assuming the repair is to replace the ECU.

The bushes failing an m.o.t. is not the same as the dealer advising of non existent faults though is it? Your issue was the attempt to wriggle out of an insurance pay out. No doubt many a Toyota dealer would have done the same too.

My example was meant to illustrate varying levels of customer service. This is going off topic.

moondog said "the dealer advised that the bushes needed replacing but they where still good enough to pass an mot"

which would be wrong of the dealer as they would be badly advising a customer to replace a part earlier than was required, lets face it if the car was still under toyota warranty do you think they would of told him that umm umm dont think so
