4.3 Petrol New Battery

Apologies if this has been covered before.

The Battery has died on our 4.3 2006 petrol. We have a europarts store only 6 miles away so was looking at a Bosch replacement. Their recommendation and a few others however seems a little lacking compared to the original.

Original Battery is a Yuasa 80D26L which is rated at 70Ah

The recommendations for replacement are a Bosch S4 005 which is only rated at 60 Ah and is physically quite smaller.

The Bosch S4 type 068 or 069 seem to be very close to original size and are also rated at 70 Ah.

Has anybody had similar issues in finding a replacement - and what have you guys fitted?

Thanks

Neil

Hi Niel - this is a regular topic - do a search on this section as there a few good ideas on which Battery you should fit. Get a Battery that fits the tray and avoid anything smaller as the RAV Battery is too small as it is.

Our original Battery in our 02-reg 4.2 lasted 9.5 years and never gave any problems, even in the two recent arctic winters that we had in the UK.

Replaced it with OEM one from Mr. T. Good price, 4 years' warranty. And they fitted it so no hassle with over-size batteries, wrong-handed terminals, etc.

Our RAV is 6.5 years old now and I believe still on original Battery so if it does start to give problems I will try to take to Toyota dealers for a replacement.

A lot of suppliers try and sell the 60 AH model, it is only something like 570 CCA too which is far too low, it should be 70 AH and 800 CCA

Our original Battery never gave any trouble and never failed. I only replaced it as I was nervous about its ability to perform in the then-coming winter after over 9 years of sterling service. In other words, I lost my bottle.

For all I know, that original may have continued to perform to this day (if we still had the car, that is).

I can understand some of the comments om here about the size/capability of that OEM Battery but, to be honest, I don't understand the concerns. Ours was used in probably the worst environment - short, urban trips for school, shopping etc. Constant starts/stops, a/c on all year round, lots of lights needed in winter, etc. Nevertheless that battery performed faultlessly so I can't quite get the criticism of it re size, etc. I works, so what else is required?

I think the small Battery stems from the original early models which did have a tiny batter on them, later diesel models did not have the problem

A large number of manufacturers use a Battery around 60A/h /550CCA on petrol vehicles up to about 2 litres. Such a Battery would be perfectly good on a petrol Rav. Buy a higher A/h / CCA by all means, but if money is a factor, it's better spent on a good quality Battery from a reputable manufacturer - rather than an unknown brand. The capacity of a battery in Ah can be misleading - it's the CCA that's important. From a practical point of view the Ah drops like a stone as you increase the load on the battery so it's important to know the load at which the Ah is quoted. Fine for batteries made in Europe - the Ah is quoted for standard conditions - for other batteries - there's often a bit of cheating!

Whereas the starter on a 2litre petrol car will take around 100-200 amps when cranking - a 2litre diesel will take 200 -350 amps! The difference is largely due to the fact that the compression ratio on a diesel is 50 -100% more than that on a petrol engine. An 800 CCA battery will be fine for most diesel cars (high compression versions of all the VW TDi's for example come with an 800CCA battery). Again, fit a higher CCA battery by all means - but money is often better spent on a good quality battery from a decent manufacturer.

Lastly, watch guarantees on batteries - in many cases a four year guarantee will give you a new battery up to the end of year 4. Others will give full cover for year 1 but a sliding scale for successive years - you might only get a 25% contribution against a new battery in year 4.
