Needing to visit Manchester fairly soon tae attend wan o ma weans' kids' christening, the choice is nummer wan and risk it being stolen in Salford (is that a place ?) or takin the train doon , first class, tae Manchester. Are trains stolen in Salford?

The cost is £102 for a first class return ticket - £51 return for each o us assuming ah tak the missus. She could tak the train but, an ah cuid tak nummer wan but the overall cost is jist a bit mair than £102 in that case.

Ah ken oil-burning RAV owners wuid scoff at my predicalement seein as they wuid spend £3.50 on oil fur the journey, even tho it would tak 8 hours each way. The missus is no fur travellin in nummer wan cos its noisy.... even tho I'd get there afore any train.

So whats it tae be ?

Hoo dae ye stairt a poll oan this forum? Never done wan afore.

They will steal the shoes you're wearing in parts of Salford, but don't worry, you always get the opportunity to buy them back. I've not heard of a train being stolen, only the track. You will be safe if you blend in, so, rub charcoal on your teeth, walk with 'attitude', i.e, 'throw' one leg as though you've had an unsuccessful hip replacement and transport any overnight luggage in bin liners.

Seriously, there are some very affluent parts to Salford, some not so, the further away from central Manchester you go the better it is. I would take the train personally.

Thanks for the tips. As it happens I have arthritic knees, and also plantar fashyitis (which I thought was a political affiliation) and with soft pads in my left show, I walk round in circles normally. Taking the 'shims' out determines the radius of the circles I walk.

I liked the one about the bin liners  I do have a suitcase, which after my son borrowed it, has only one castor wheel left so covering it with a bin bag will serve the purpose. If its stolen, all they will get is a box ful of tena men ! (Waterworks testing still ongoing even after getting a fishing rod stuck up my w##l#e). The Yourologist said I might have kidney stones, to which I said rubbish - I have never ate stones in ma life. Ah don't even like listening to them. The advantage of the train is that I can p the seats and not have to worry about washing the Sparco seats in nummer wan.

OK, its off on a days journey to the station we have 800 yards away to buy a senior citizens railcard. Never know - might bump into ancs as he passes by ! (in a train). Transpennine offering the best deal, but would you trust an oil-burning RAV4 owner to drive the train? Unless maybe the train is an oil-burner too??

P M S L at this, for the benefit of forum members who have never met Bothy, he speaks in a softly spoken

but very Posh ENGLISH accent. I reckon it's because he grew up in that Edinburgh. So when you are in

Salford Bothy you better watch out as they may mug you, but only because they mistake you as coming

from that London.

And just to get back on topic, don't know about his fence posts, but he does sell very good SLEEPERS.

At a good price too.

First Group too good to resist?

Bothy, the train you'll travel on will burn more oil than you can ever dream of! That's the Cummins QSK19 for you

Bothy min, let the train take the strain. We went to that York last year with East Coast Trains and I was very impressed. I had a couple of wee drams en route and it even arrived on time!

Great service and the sandwiches were edible too! smashin.

Thanks for the offers and advice. I bought myself, under duress, 2 senior citizen railcards, having blackened my face to look like an out of work coal miner from the 1960s.

Then bought and reserved 2 seats in first class travelling down at the end of the month. Ancs.... if you are on the route that day, I'll try to teach you how to do wheelies! Duncerduncs - the coded message I guess is to disguise the fact that the train has 125 doors and not wan hinge !

Dave M - dinna gie the game awa....ah hae ma credibility tae think aboot!

Jist back frae a jaunt tae Glasgae bit cuidnae find BKs RAV fur the wheels fur anither member. I guess BK is visiting Paisley waur the mods are haein a festival. BK in a parka ??? Gie ye the boak.

Not sure whither tae tak ma electrified wheelchair oan the journey seein as a cuid charge it up frae the lecky above the train.

Fur a point of infurmashun, ah wis born in Fife at an urly age, an went tae school in Wallasey afore gettin sent back tae scotland tae beat edwards army..... the accent comes frae failin ma English language exams like whit the English dae. Nae luck there then eh?

I had the "joy" of riding on two East Coast trains a week ago. About an hour spent on first between Peterborough and York, and another 2 hours between York and Berwick, and it was probably the worst journey on a train I have had in many, many a year.

I don't know about people nicking trains, but someone has been nicking the padding from all the seats!

Bothy, I know you tend to carry around your own padding, but might want to pack a few cushions to sit on just in case.

Definitely let the train take the strain.

Once your there M/ c has a great metro link network to get about.

The media used to paint a lurid picture of Salford ..and then decided to moved there, lock stock and barrel,to create what's now known as Media City, home to most BBC and ITV news programmes.

The old Salford docks area has had a multi million pound makeover to include the Lowry centre and the Imperial war museum, and is now an internationally acclaimed visitor attraction.

Salfordians are mostly very friendly people.

I'm sure you will have a great time Ian.

Must admit to having been down there before - done the Lowry Centre twice without being arrested and seen the media centre.

The thought of complimentary drinks in the first class is a risk worth taking. Might have to take my wheelchair so I can get wheeled aff the train but.

Is it still 240 volts in England or have they succumbed to cuts as well? Hoovie - why dya think the missus is coming along? Tae gie up her seat fur me so ah can pit the seat oan ma ain.

BK - Goretex cushions.... you know something that I don't ?

Paul - thanks for painting the nice picture.... if yer ever up in bonny Bothwell, let me know and ye can gie nummer wan a try oot yersel!

They say so, however the last few times I've tested it's been anywhere between 235 & 250!
