Noisy Heater Fan. ?

My car has the gremlins just of late ... Latest one being a clattering noise from the heater fan which started this morning ...

Any ideas ?? It's obviously buried under the dash and sounds like it's up behind the glove box. ???

Noise is like holding a playing card against a bike wheel spokes. !!! I need a new car. !!!!!!!!

There is some limited access from behind glove compartment richt enough, Charlie, to top of fan.

Sounds like you have a wee autumn leaf impersonating a roulette ball inside the fan. Job for Henry....?

G'morning Charlie,

Yes - probably a stray autumn leaf, or crisp packet.

Parts diagram shows that the heater motor/fan unit looks the same as our 4.2, in which case you can simply drop the fan out by unplugging it (short flying lead and connector), and removing three screws. Access is essentially the same as getting to the pollen filter: swing down the glovebox, and you'll see the fan. Remove by contorting yourself in the footwell.

Almost definitely just a leaf. Had the same in mine. If you haven't changed it in ages, chuck a new pollen filter in at the same time, it WILL be filthy!

Easy job as said, just awkward (find a small child to do it?!)

MMMmmmm I hold my head in shame at the state of aforementioned Pollen filter... It had actually collapsed allowing several of the aforementioned autumn leaves.. Some were within the fan so could be fished out by fingers but one had made its way behind the fan itself so the aforementioned 3 screws and the gubbins in the way were removed so the aforementioned fan could be removed.. All I need to do now is by an aforementioned new pollen filter and bob will be mums bruv..

As always many thanks ..... I still need the aforementioned new car though .............

Aforementioned hindsight is a wondrous thing. Was it nice in the footwell?

Not to bad Chris.. The three 8mm bolts were easy enough to remove once I was upside down with me feet hanging over the back of the passenger seat ! Seriously it was not to bad a job but would have been very hard without the heads up on the three screw/bolts so thanks for that ! All is nice and quiet now and a new pollen filter is on its way.. Cheers !

Charlie,

Good result!

"Upside down with me feet hanging over the back of the passenger seat" !!! Takes me back a bit: a girlfriend once ruined a perfectly good Rover headlining with her stiletto . . . Sweet memories . . .
