Funny Noises!

Hi All.

I'm seeking a little advice please and potentially help in finding an expert ear in Yorkshire!

I recently bought my 2005 mk 2 with 96k on the clock, which seemed ok when I found it.

However I seem to have some strange noises and could do with some expertise to get an idea if I can claim for some of it on the warranty.

Initially I noticed a minor grind when shifting from 4th to 3rd, so thinking it might be my synchro I had it checked by the warranty company and yet on the day it wasn't replicated. (Typical)

Since this I have been a bit more sensitive to odd noises and have noticed a squeak in the engine bay ( bearings or a belt and only just audible). Secondly a grinding style of noise from within the engine bay/ gearing.

I'm a little wary of spending extra time and lots of money for a warranty company to deny that I have a problem.

Just wondered if anyone (mechanical expert) is around the York area who really knows about the Rav 4 and might be able to check out my car to see if they can work out what's up.

Thinking of a new timing belt and renew oils at a major service to make sure all is good there too, but don't want to do all that yet if they might rip my gearbox to pieces for the synchro etc. ( maybe even clutch and DFW too)

Still have two month window to get to the bottom of things and claim for getting some of it sorted if necessary.

Hopefully there is some expertise around here and a helping hand for a fellow Rav man. Alternatively are these things I am better to get checked at Toyota dealership (probably take my eyes out)

If the noise stops when you press the clutch that is normal. The squeaks may well be the belts which you can test by pouring warm water on them while the engine is idling. The gear grinding does need listening to. Maybe a good local garage if somebody doesn't come forward.

The gear oil should be changed every 2 years and usually results in very long life.

Thanks for the advice Anchorman.

Bit the bullet in the end and booked it in for a service at the main dealers and they are going to change all the oils and replace the timing belt too. My logic in the end was that they will have the best knowledge of the car and potentially pick up on any other issues during the service. If they fin fan issue my warranty company can't quibble too much if it is a main dealer who is highlighting a problem. Once the work is done I know what it's not going to be!

Fingers crossed a little pain now will pay dividends in the long term.

Quick update guys.

Service went OK, and the garage brought up my issue with the 4th to 3rd gear shift. Rang my warranty company and they authorised the work to be covered. Well over £1000 of it. Miracle! Only issue came in the form of the timing belt change. Looks like some absolute muppet had tried doing the work and really messed it up. They had forgotten a washer on the Crank Shaft Pulley and that had allowed the belt to wander and part of my recent noise was the belt rubbing the casing! Acracked tensioner has now been replaced, but sadly the idiots have also chipped the edge of my Crank Shaft Pulley too. As such I think it is best to replace the pulley pretty soon. Had a quick quote from the main dealers and nearly fell off my chair! £285 unfortunately and I think that was WITH some discount too. The guys have really looked after me on all the rest of the work, but I could really do with finding a lower price for one of these. Seen all sorts at £50, but *%"s law mine is a more expensive version. Help in tracking one down will be greatly appreciated:

Crank Shaft Pulley : Rav 4 Mk 2 2.0 D4D 2005, Part Number: 13408-27020

Already tried many of the usual motor factor supplier with no luck so hoping that one of you guys will know of a little gem!

It's good to read your Rav is almost 'fighting fit' and ready for winter. There's a second hand crank pulley on e-bay, also, pattern ones available from the far east (not sure about the quality). I might be tempted to find a good second hand one.

Paul.
