Flog it or Keep it? Old faithful has now racket up 103k miles and the second cambelt change is now due at 105k miles. Tax and Mot due end of next month and I know the front discs need replacing along with an oil change, fuel filter air filter cabin filter!. I was envisaging a price of about £800 just for the cam belt, I think last time it took them 8 hours (under warranty via the water pump replacement), but to my surprise I can now get it done for (under 4 hours) at Toyota for just £280 inc vat. Discs and pads also at Toyota £220, I know i could do them myself via Kingo for £139.

Then we have the oil and all the filters!

Car is going really well at the mo, I went for the EGR clean out and then blanked it off to see if the limp mode disappeared and it has! The EML is on, I tried to seal it with gasket sealant, but it still comes on - I think I can live with it, but does anyone know if it will cause a problem at MOT time?

I’ve had the old girl for 5 years and to be honest probably just getting slightly itchy feet, but do I bite the bullet and run her for another 5 years or trade in for something with a bit more, GO!

What! …Midlife crisis you say? maybe, but given I used to change my cars more often than my underpants and this is the longest I have managed to stick with a car, I think I have done quite well.

I like the look of the Volvo S60 SE D5 (04-07)

GOOD: 160bhp or 180bhp well over 40mpg, they go like stink, are built like a tank and are very

safe, best seats I’ve every sat in, best stock stereo system in a car this side of 100k, capable of mega mileage, the police

use lots of the V70 estate with same engine.

BAD: Crap turning circle and a few known problems that are easily rectified (drop links, top engine mount).

The early 4.3 version of the RAV has put me off (too many engine problems)

According to my manual the cambelt change is at 70k though I know Anchorman says its 60K. Whatever why do you need another one at only 105K? Cheapest car is the one standing on your driveway.

Definitely stick, with the old adage the devil you know! Our Spanish car is 10 now, and going well, niggles aside. Depreciation less, and yes its "old faithful", but we LOVE it!!

Everything you mentioned is just general maintenance needed on all cars. If you buy a new one it will need half what you just mentioned within the year. AND could need a whole lot more you don't know about (even if it's new)

If the cars running well I'd "stick".

I intend on keeping my Rav (bought at 3 years old, had for 3 years) till it drops. In my previous purchase (sadly a LR, still got) I've done 130000 miles in the last ten years. So you get the idea, I don't chop and change much!

How many have gone away only to regret it and then bought another Rav later?

I had to have my water pump replaced at 45k (under warranty) which meant I got the cam belt changed into the bargain, fast forward 60k = 105k time for belt change! I’am on 103k now so it needs planning for.

Not sure mate but a simple code reader will have the option to turn off the light.....

My understanding is that this was an advisory issue until 2012 but is now a failure, all systems with a warning light must function correctly

Not sure mate but a simple code reader will have the option to turn off the light.....

I’am as tight as a ducks derrier - will a disconnect of the neg. Battery terminal sort it?

No mate it's recorded on the ECU as far as I know so it needs turning off in order to clear the ECU. if it's footprint. ....

If you manage to reset the light before you take the car for MOT you might be lucky and it will stay off during the test, it's 'Painting over the muck' though......

Not really! I know it is just not sealed properly, when i blanked of the EGR after having cleaned it out. I have run the car for while now (blanked off) and the limp mode has not returned, so at least it pinpointed the EGR for me and saved me having to do the SCVs which many on here have replaced to no avail. Going to take out the blank and get the ECU reset before the MOT and see what happens.
