Leaking Fuel Pipe On 2006 Xt5

Hi all

I have an 06 plate XT5 that has done 47k miles. Noticed diesel dripping on the drive today. On closer inspection, fuel is dripping from the fuel pipe at its junction with the tank near the jack lift point on the rear passenger side. The pipe is enclosed in a corrugated plastic/rubber sleeve. I had to put a container under the car and it collected about 1/4 pint diesel over 4 hours. What would be the best bet to get it repaired, Mr T or a local garage? Many thanks!

Sounds like the sort of job where parts are cheap but the labour may not be?

Personally I'd go to Mr T as I don't know/trust any local garages. Sometimes locals can be false economy if they don't actually know what they're doing! But if they do, it'll be slightly cheaper.

Depends who you know!

Wait till Voyager T180 comes on. He had the same thing recently and knows all the costs etc.

This could be a new one for 4.3 owners at 7 years. A good reason for wax treatment when new.

Well Don..exactly as you predicted! and as you say proves the value of wax/oil treatment.

Talim, mine was completely rusted and replaced by Toyota at a cost of £278 parts and labour, and its not quite as simple a DIY job as it might first appear either,so let Mr T do it. there is no way you can do a repair, and its not worth the risk with fuel pipes, even though, unlike petrol, diesel isn't easily ignited.

This pipe seems to be tucked out of harms way,so why it should corrode in such a relatively short time I just don't know?

Ask to see the old pipe, you'll be surprised how corroded it is.

Took car to an independent garage that specialises in Toyota and Lexus because it's close to my work place. They contacted Toyota...part not available in UK at present...can be shipped in on 29/10/13 the earliest. Manage to source one from a breaker. Waiting for delivery now.

I got mine done within 3 days so I must have been lucky.

I'd be wary of fitting a used one,you could be back to where you started in 12 months time.

Something as important as this, and passing up via possibly the most hostile environment a car produces, made of painted mild steel FFS. The petrol one......is that the same......? Don't flick yer fags oot the window then........?

Hmm, is this not a safety issue in the event of a collision? Recall pending?

Was there a production mod at some point when this became evident? Not reassured to be honest.

Possible safety issue...Good thinking Dave.

Recall issue,very unlikely IMO.

But could be worth researching .

The fact there is no stock in the UK makes me think it is a new problem just coming to light. How much is just the parts?

Mr T quoted £150 + VAT. Managed to get one from a breaker for £80 + £10 delivery.

One would presume then, Talim, you are going to apply approx. 13 coats of Hammerite paint, then Tetroseal........?

Sounds to me like a Toyota "fingers crossed we don't all moan too much" recall avoider........

Fuel pipe £151.14 inc vat

Labour £123.80 inc vat

Total £274.94.

Job completed within two days by RRG including a full vehicle safety check.

Bear in mind most dealers will charge a £50 diagnostic check fee, refundable if they do the job.

Too late for me now but would fuel pipe corrosion be included in any body work warranty?

Ravs over five yrs old seem to be affected.

Cant really see there being a recall Kev,but the numbers reported could have an effect, time will tell..

No concerns over diesel igniting, but petrol.....? Golly gosh.......

Correctamundo Kev.

New word for your repertoiredirectory.

PETROL engines would definitely be a safety issue..

Golly gosh indeed!

Not so sure Kev - I know diesel won't ignite with a match but:

Diesel flash point 62 deg C, auto ignition point 210 deg C

Catalytic converter 200 - 340 deg C

Just had a call from the garage the part was meant to be in the uk today. They are now saying November the 23rd! Very poor parts backup!

Any suggestions on how to proceed? worth calling\ emailing toyota uk? What can they do?

im in north east scotland so will be winter by then which was one of the reasons for having the rav4.

Call TGB, they might be able to expedite one for you, you could do with getting the part number and NMSC number from the dealer to speed up the process

Kingo
