Help! I Need To Understand

:help: I have just bought what I thought was a Toyota Celica, 1994 import from Japan. It is very beautiful and has Celica GT badged on the back. I know it is a 2ltr and is 2 wheel drive. It has twin headlamps and under the bonnet on the vin plate it says ST-202. It appears to be restricted to 120 mph.

1. WHAT HAVE I BOUGHT AND IS IT ANY GOOD?

2. CAN IT BE DE-RESTICTED TO PERFORM BETTER?

3. IF SO - HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?

Thanks for any help you petrol heads out there can give me.

Yeah, okay you would usually find this out pre purchase but okay??...

I'm not 100% sure what engine is by chassis code in the later ones but probably a 3S-GE. If not it's a 3S-FE. The latter being the less desireable of the two as the GE has more power. I'm not sure why you want to derestrict it yet but I would concentrate on get to it's limits a little fast than getting rid of a 120 mph cut. Go the exhaust and filter, cheap and can't go wrong really. Some one will clear that engine ID up as theres a few people round that live, breathe, eat and sleep with chassis codes I'm certain.

well done, you have made a good choice. look to the left side of the engine, the engine code should be stamped on the cover. it sounds like a 3sge. not a bad engine (same as mine).

clean the throttle body, run some injector cleaner through the next full tank.

get some guys to fit a FULL exhaust system, a big back box wont do much, fit a induction kit but ensure the sensors on the current induction system are incorporated, this means custom and means £500-600 for the lot. if you take the entire induction system out, wrong messages will be sent to the ecu.

you will find that the outlet pipes from the block for the exhaust are too small, so a gain will be felt with a widened full system immediatley.

i would not reccomend K&N or back box gadgets, do the whole hog for 30BHP gain.

or get rid of it and get the 3s-gte - turbo'd engine.

If you are like me, you will be happy with what you got. your 3sge tuned and cleaned thoroughly should hit 130mph, like mine. you may not see a high increase after customising but bottom end will feel better. anyhow, you can't often drive over 100-110mph in todays traffic.

dont let the turbo boys wind you up. customise and let the 3sge breath.
