You need to run a search for ' death rattle '.

The 1zz-fe 140 engine used in the 1999-2002, up to 52 plate before the facelift model had a design problem which causes excess oil burning and if allowed to run dry will lead to engine failure.

Only four solutions I'm aware of, Mikis.

Sell the car

Rebuild the engine using face lift pistons

Fit a face lift VVTi engine

Fit a VVTi-L engine

In your nephews situation, I would part exchange the car while it's running well.

Thank you both for your replies.

Scarlett, sorry i don't understand what does ''part exchange'' means.

Can you please explain.

As the others have said, "Death Rattle"

I know hindsight is wonderful, but he should have done some research on Celica based forums.

The good thing is, keep topping up the Oil and it won't kill the engine (yet) it could possibly run for another couple of years.
